[Third-Person Narrative POV]
"How is he?" Roxy asked as she stepped into the house she'd been to a million times. She looked around with raised eyebrows and shocked eyes.
Furniture was shredded and destroyed all across the room. There were holes in the walls and shattered glass on the floor. It looked like a tornado had been contained to just this house.
"He's a fucking mess." Saul said.
They knew each other some. When she'd been Alex's source of blood they'd run into each other from time to time and Saul had been curious about the human who was okay with a vampire feeding on her.
"Come on." He said and led her through the house to Lexi's bedroom.
She'd walked this hall more times than she could count, but she'd never been more nervous. Even back in the beginning before she really knew him she hadn't been so anxious. He'd always been in perfect control of himself, but a vampire who wasn't in control was dangerous. She was trusting Saul to keep him in line and she wasn't so sure she trusted Saul. If she was being completely honest with herself, which she couldn't always be, she was risking her life because she cared for Alex in some capacity or another.
Saul opened the door and walked in ahead of her. He motioned to the bed with a 'see?' look on his face.
Roxy stepped in cautiously. She didn't know what to expect from the man laying on the bed like he'd been thrown on it. Maybe he had. He wasn't moving. She couldn't be sure he was even breathing. The closer she got, the more she could see the state of him. His shirt was torn all over and stained in blood that looked to be his. His hair, which had always been done perfectly, was grown out and wild. Curls went in every direction. It was frizzy, which she didn't even know it could be. The entire time she'd known him, all three years, he'd had the same long stubble. It had been a choice to keep it that length. But now he had a growing, scraggly beard that clearly hadn't been kept up on in a while.
Who was this Alex who didn't take care of himself?
"Go away." His voice was more growl than human.
She jumped hard with a sharp gasp. Then gathered herself.
"You need to feed." She said calmly. Her voice didn't betray any of her anxiety. She was too used to acting calm under duress.
"Go." His monstrous voice left no room for negotiation.
"No." She said just as sternly.
Saul kept his surprise to himself. The woman was either brave or stupid. Or both. Either way his friend needed fed before he went off the deep end.
Douglas had zero patience anymore. She'd surpassed any he could afford her.
Before she could even see it, he grabbed her and pinned her down on her back on the bed. His terrifying fangs were only inches from her face as he growled something straight out of a horror movie.
She gasped when he grabbed her and she was suddenly yanked forward, and shrunk back into the blanket as he roared in her face. She was trapped and at his mercy and it terrified her. This was not the man she'd known for so long.
Saul was on him in a flash. His hand gripped Alex's throat and jaw tight. He tried to remove his friend's hands from the girl, but if he wasn't careful he'd just hurt her too.
But Douglas made no move to fight him. "Go."
Roxy forced herself to look him in his wild eyes. Her face shown only determination despite the fear she reeked of that both men could smell. "No."
