On Friday morning Anne woke up in a ecstatic mood just as she had Wednesday and Thursday. She jumped out of her bed and with a skip in her step as she made her way to her dresser. She decided to change her regular brown ribbons out for a less ordinary style. She tied her white ribbons at the point where her plaits began and then wrapped a turquoise ribbon Diana had given her the day she attended school with "boy hair" as Mr Philipps liked to call it, around her head tying a bow at the back so it ordained her neckline. She brushed her boots till they shined then made her way down the stairs carefully as to not injure her (now almost healed) ankle.
She scarfed down her oatmeal then ran off towards the door, bidding Marilla and Mathew farewell. Gilbert had walked her to school every morning since she sprained her ankle. Therefor, yes, she was eager to be free to run through fields and climb her tree. But a small part of her, actually a gargantuan part of her, wished her ankle would take its time healing. She wanted this for a couple of reasons. The fact that had been bothering her and perplexing her recently was that Every single one of these reasons seemed to revolve around one person.
Gilbert.
Although she knew it is probably considered selfish, she really really, didn't want to stop walking to school with him. But it wasn't only that, no, there were other reasons.
One of the biggest ones being that she found herself savoring all his touches. She closed her eyes trying to remember how her body gets warm as he holds her hand and puts his arm around her shoulder as they walk to school. Her whole body tingled as she recalled the scene that had been playing endlessly in her mind since it occurred. As she stood under green gables archway with her eyes still closed, she sighed dreamily as she tried to take herself back to that moment the other day when he he laid on top of her.
It was a peculiar feeling she felt in that moment. A feeling that made her never want to leave that position. She could make excuses for how they ended up like that, but she could not however, make excuses for the fact that she liked it.
She had never been that close with anyone before, and she knew it was bad to be so intimate with someone, if you could even call it intimate considering it was an accident, but she knew that they could have gotten off each other quicker, they probably should have actually. But in that moment, they way Gilbert was looking at her, was overwhelming and endlessly confusing. She wondered if she looked at him like that. She had strong inclination that she indeed had. Gilbert hadn't looked at her like that since, in fact he hadn't looked at her much as of late.
~~ skip forward to lunch time (sorry I cut out them walking to school I am impatient and I really wanted to get to this part)~~~~~~~
Anne lay on her back with her legs bent so her knees faced the luscious white clouds. The day was ordained by a cloudy filter. Unlike most people Anne loved cloudy days, in fact she normally would be sighing in contentment as she greeted the friendly shapes the white gas made in the sky. But today was not a usual day, Anne seemed bothered, and Diana could tell of course.
The raven haired girl observed how Anne furrowed her eyebrows and bit her lip, fidgeting with her fingers. Diana finally had enough of the girl being unusually quiet.
"Anne what is wrong?"
Anne turned her head to look at her bosom friend. She hadn't told Diana about that happened between her and Gilbert and as a result she felt quite guilty. But another part of Anne knew that Diana would make it into something it wasn't, which would bother her tremendously, yes she hated it.
"Nothing."
Diana could tell by the way Anne said it that this was a complete lie.
"Nothing?"
"Nothing." Anne said trying to make this the conclusion of their conversation.
"Mmhm."
Diana looked over Gilbert Blythe who sat against the wall alone, which was very rare considering he was the designated avonlea heartthrob. Not only that but his head was in his hands, as his arms rested on his knees that bent up. He ran a hand through his hair in apparent frustration. He lifted his head for a second and looked over at Anne, but it was only a glance before he turned his head away sharply his face read something of pain and confusion. Diana looked back at Anne with a confused yet all-knowing expression.
"Are you sure it has nothing to do with Gilbert."
Anne pursed her lips so she wouldn't say anything.
"Anne?"
Diana said very intrigued.
Anne only closed her eyes pretending to be asleep, for someone so intelligent Anne cursed herself for not coming up with something more convincing. There was no way Diana fell for it but still she said.
"I'll be back."
Then Anne heard her best friend stand up and begin walking towards to schoolhouse, she desperately wanted to eavesdrop but couldn't hear what was being said as Diana walked over to where someone sat against the wall.
