"What's better than burger, fries and good friends?"
❥
Jeff Atkins has always admired how strong the short girl is. She's been raised without a mom or a dad, but instead she only ever had her grandfather and uncle and even her uncle is gone from time to time as he's in the army. She's been alone for most of the time and still manages to be a nice person to everyone. She sees the good in people, even in their darkest hour. Jeff has missed the way she's talking about her little family. Liz used to talk a lot about Will, especially when they were younger. But the more he had to leave, the less she talked about him.
"I have to stay here for Monty. He'll stay at my place tonight." "We could pick him up when we're done", Jeff offers although he already knows that her answer's a no. "No, you're right. I should enjoy this party and not run away." "Yeah, you haven't played a game. That would help get your thoughts back to the good time." "You're right", Liz nods and before she can say anything else, Montgomery stumbles over interrupting their conversation. Sometimes, he can't just be left alone.
"Jeff, bro, what's up?", he bawls and the pair could tell he's drunk. "Monty, what do you want?", Liz asks him already prepared for a stupid joke or whatever Monty is thinking of again. "Why don't you hook up with Scotty?", the tan boy asks not thinking about the fact that Jeff is still standing next to them, "He's been looking at you. Not that type of look that would tell you that you dressed up nice. More like a ‚get-undressed' look."
The Atkins' boy would love to storm over to his best friend to check if what Montgomery says is true but he is also interested in hearing what his girl has to say. In his reality, she still belongs to him. "Looks like you've had enough, Monts. Come on, let's get you some water", Liz tries to stay as normal as possible although her mind is full of thoughts. Why would he say that? Is Scott really looking at her? Didn't he hate her? What about Jeff? But she knew that none of these questions would be answered that night so she tries to act like it didn't affect her.
"No, I don't need water. I'm hungry", Monty replies sounding like a child. When Montgomery is drinking and staying close to her, he can be quite cute. He knows that she would never judge him for anything so he can be fully himself around her. "Then eat some chips, boy", the girl chuckles. "No. Can we go to Rosie's? I want a burger." Jeff couldn't help but chuckle. He knew she would say yes to Monty eventually. "Monty-" "Please?" "Oh man", Liz groans and nods, "Fine. But you go and ask the others as well. I don't want to be asked twice."
"You're the best", Monty grins goofily and hugs her happily before he storms off to ask their other friends. "I hate you, Cruz", she giggles enjoying the fact that he can be so cute around her. "I'm kind of offended, you know", Jeff comments but smiles at the girl knowing that she would do anything for her friends. "You're coming with us", she decides and Jeff nods. It's better to see her and her friends than no one.
"By the way, it looks like our mission won't work", she changes the topic to Clay. "Why? Don't be so skeptical. You were skeptical about me, too, and in the end it worked out." "We broke up, Jeff", she reminds him bluntly and wonders how he could see this as 'working out'. "But we wouldn't hurt the other because with we're in love with each other." "You did hurt me", Liz emphasize now being confused if he missed the past year. "Yeah, you're right", he suddenly regrets, "I'm trying to forget about that. I've hurt both of us." "We can't change it."
"I mean we could-" "Jeff, we already tried it again and had to worry about the same problems. We gave each other a promise. Only two years left." Jeff and her broke up once and came back together but they had the same problems as before so they decided that after school, they would go to college together and then work it out. Before any of them would become too emotional about it, changes the topic back to their mission.
"What I'm trying to say is.. you are right, I am too skepical, but I have my reasons." "And why should our mission fail then?", Jeff questions not understanding why she would say it this early. Hannah and Clay haven't even talked enough to each other to already fail. "I've watched the game with Hannah earlier-" "Great, she likes sports." "Okay, a) why does that matter and b) Clay doesn't do any sports so how is that great?"
"I like people who like sports." "You're unique, J", she gives him a warm smile, "Okay, back to the topic. A girl who's not a cheerleader or in any sports team and doesn't have a group of friends yet only goes to a game to watch a boy play. She must like one of your team mates." "Or me." "No, I think Kat made sure that Hannah will never even look at you." "Why though? Maybe I want her to." "Because Kat announced that you're off limits."
"Let me guess, you probably don't mind when people know that I'm off limits?", Jeff grins flashing her a cocky smile making the girl roll her eyes and ignored the meaning behind his question. "Back to the original topic. Hannah likes one of you guys. Either we end our mission or we intervene and make her realize who Clay is." "Sounds like a plan to me." "Would we-"
"Bryce and Sheri join us", Monty announces as soon as he comes back to the pair interrupting Liz's words. "Alright, then let's go", she simply replies and turns to Jeff, "Come on, let's go to Rosie's", she offers him seriously but laughs remembering how he already made her that offer and now it's the other way around. "At least I get to be at Rosie's with you", Jeff tells her in a quiet voice and follows her around.
