how it all began

"That's how it all began, all of the pain, the love, the ups and downs."

It all started when we were six years old. Some kid was hitting another one while the rest of the class watched them. Bryce and I didn't understand why someone would treat the boy like that. We felt bad for him. And we were friends with Montgomery and Zach, they were one head taller than the others kids. They were scared of him. So no one would hurt us.

"Leave him alone!", Bryce ran up to the two boys who were fighting, I followed him. "Hey, he insulted me! And he wears the same shirt like yesterday and he stinks." "No, you stink", I pointed to the boy and waved my hand in front of my nose. "Hey, man, here", Bryce gave the other boy his hand but he slapped it. "I can take care of myself, should I prove it? Anytime." "No."

"Hey, Bryce. There's the boy from yesterday", Sheri moved her head into his direction, „What's his name?" "I heard people calling him Justin so I guess that's his name", Monty said. "Mountain, you're so smart", I giggled.

"Ellie, I said you shouldn't call me that. I don't like it." "But Mountain, Bryce the mice and Cherry are my names for you. You can give me a nickname, too. I do that only to kids that I like." "Did you give the boy over there a name already?", Bryce pointed to Jeff. "Ellie's in love", Sheri giggled.

"Be quiet! I'm not in love. Will says I don't need to be in love until I'm thirty years old. That means I've still got twenty-three years for you and me." "You do everything that he says. Jeff picked you a flower." "I don't need a flower. All that I need are books. They bring me to Harvard, Will says."

"Oh, Ellie. What even is Harvard?", Mountain rolled his eyes. "Don't roll your eyes, that's not nice", I looked down, "He says my dad went there and I want to be like my dad when I'm older." "You mean you want to be dead?", some other kid laughed when he walked past.

"Don't listen to them", Zachy told me, "You're not alone." "Yes and when you invite Jeff to play with you cards you've got one more person around you", Sheri smiled. "I've got a better idea first", I stood up, not letting the other kid's words come to my mind, "Come with me."

My friends followed me, Monty spoke to Justin first, "Where's your food?" "I already ate it", Justin answered. "Out of the trash?", the same kid that was mean to me said. "Shut up, no!" "Do you want a sandwich?", Bryce offered him. "No." "Marisa made it with turkey. I hate turkey."

"I'm not hungry." "Why is your skin red?", Zach asked. Sheri walked around the table and sat down next to Justin, "You don't have to be sad." "Come on, take the sandwich. I've got one left, too", I offered. "I'll get a twinkey for it." "I don't have twinkeys." Bryce stood up and walked to the mean boy, took his twinkeys.

"Hey, they're mine!" "And now they're his." "You don't have to defend me." "I know but I wanted a twinkey." "You're our friend now", I smiled, "These are Zachy, Cherry, Mountain and Bryce the mice." "Weird names." "Don't ever call us like that", Sheri shook her head, „But welcome to our friendship."

"Monty, you really need to leave your home. Your dad is sick. You could move in with us. Now that I'm back at Will's house and my grandpa is there, too, we could give you a home. You stayed over a thousand times. None of us would give you a black eye", I sighed. "Thanks for the reminder, Lennox. Man, I'd be lost without you. You save my ass every time."

We were driving to the place where he would hide when his dad completely freaks out. Scotty told us he would wait there for us. "Hey, Scotty", Monty said while I gave my boyfriend a kiss. "Hey, baby. Hey, Bryce is looking for you, Monty." "You didn't tell him, right?"

"No, of course not. I would never. Who are you hiding from this time?" "His dad ran after him with a hammer when we left the house", I rolled my eyes not understanding how cruel a man could be to his own son. "Yeah, I'm staying on the streets for a few days." "Why are you here, Scotty?"

"I'm not a rapist", he said completely serious. "Okay." "No one said that, babe. The accusations go against Bryce and Tony was saying bullshit yesterday", I tried to help but he seemed a behaved awkward right now. "I'm done with people believing that. We covered Bryce way too long, man. Come on, that's enough."

"Okay, what do you want from me?" "Give us the polaroids back", we heard Clay say. I instantly stepped closer to Monty. It seemed like Clay wanted to surprise Monty. But why the hell was Scott here? "What the hell?" "They've told me everything. Els, come to me. Monty's insane."

"Wait, have you been the rat that talked about the clubhouse?", I asked laying my arm on Monty's breast so he wouldn't immediately freak out. "No, that was me", Zach came to us proudly. "Of course it was you", Monty spit, "Fuck it, I'm gone. Come on, Ellie."

"Zach", I whispered, "We were fucking best friends. Fuck it, let's go, Monty." "What's going on, Monty? Are you scared?", Tony, Justin and Alex joined. "Oh my god, seriously? All of you? You don't even know what a true friendship is. You're all some fucked up hypocrites", I laughed shaking my head.

"Ellie, go away from him. You don't know what he's done. But we do. You've urged me off the streets", Clay moved closer. "The target." "The dead rat." "Well, that suits you", I spit at Zach. It's been Monty and I in a circle of the people who hated us.. and my boyfriend. Why the fucking hell would he betray us by setting a trap for us?

"My fucking car." "I don't know what you're talking about", Monty sounded slightly nervous so I took his hand. "Give us the polaroids back and we let you go." "You let me go? And if not? Are you going to hit me with your crutch again?" But Alex pulled out a gun pointing it right between Monty and I. The other boys gasped, they didn't seem to be prepared for that.

"Fuck." "Shit." "Els, come here now", Scotty reached out for me but I pushed him back. "Shut the hell up", I hissed back. "Hey, Alex." "Alex, where did you get that from?" "Montgomery gave it to me." "Okay, well, I'll give you the photos and you let us go. That's the deal", he breathed heavily.

"Good. Then give them to us." "I have to get them, they're not here." "I'm coming with you", Alex put the gun down. "Good, me too", I decided. To be honest, I was afraid of what could happen between the two of them. They hated each other. And right now, I expected the worst. "Ellie." "Oh, shut up all of you. None of you cares so don't act like it."

"You gave him a gun? A gun?! You're a stupid idiot, an idiot! He's pointing the fucking gun into my face because you gave it to him. You're such an idiot, Monty!", I screamed at Monty when he was driving, Alex sat on the back seat and watched us. "Ellie, calm down."

"Calm down? You're telling me to calm down? How could you do all of this?!" "You could ask me first if I even did that." "Oh, I know that only you could be so stupid." "I'm going to kill Scott", he changed the topic. "Not after I'm done with you. I'm so fucking angry right now, Monty. Just give him the stupid tapes finally."
