"When you don't know whether you'll see him again or not, your world is teared apart."
❥
"What is it?", Liz asks Jeff while closing the door to the bathroom. "I'm going on a beer run. Do you need something else or do you want to join me?", Jeff asks her politely hoping that they could talk to each other alone in the car. The girl looks at him surprised thinking he would have played beer pong by now. "Haven't you drunk a beer?" "Two beers two hours ago. I'll have more after the beer run but I offered Jess to do it so."
Liz thinks about it for a moment but shakes her head then. She's talked to Jeff before and actually wanted to spend time with Scott now. "I'd stay here and I don't need anything but thanks for asking", she nods telling herself that it's fine just like that. Jeff is surprised by her answer but nods as well. He doesn't want to question her answer if he doesn't know about her reasons. He could make a move on her when he comes back. "Then I'll see you when I come back", Jeff says and gives her a kiss on her forehead before he leaves.
Scott could easily hear them from where he was standing so as soon as Jeff has left, he comes outside. Liz takes her chance to make a move on him this time. "Do you want to go home with me?", she asks him easily hoping for him to say yes. "I mean I'm pretty tired anyways", he shrugs playing cool so she hits his upper arm and they laugh, "No, seriously. Let's go home. I think we've got better things to do."
"Wait, have you drunk something?", Liz asks Scott when they get into his car. Usually, none of the boys stays sober and if he didn't, they couldn't even drive home. "Nothing at all, Els. I wasn't in the mood for it tonight", Scott tells her honestly in a way, "You're safe with me." Her lips form to a smile as he says that. She's safe with him. Yes I am, she thinks to herself realizing that in between all of their conversations and evenings, she must have started to trust him.
She usually never trusts anyone apart from her friends. She didn't even like him for the past years. And now they sit in his car driving home back to her place where they would spend the remaining time with each other. Like a couple, she wonders knowing anything about their relationship apart from the fact that both of them enjoy it.
Sometimes she wonders when she should tell him about her feelings. Even if he didn't like her back, it would give her certainty about their situation. She wouldn't want to wait forever to find out if this is sex only between them or a lot more. "I know, Scotty. I trust you." Scott's heart warms up knowing that it takes a lot for her to trust him but if she does, she must really like him.
"Els?" "Hm?" "What if the situation between Jeff and you was different. If it wasn't for him, what about us?" Scott immediately regrets saying those words as if he wanted Jeff to not be with them but Liz knows exactly what he means. If Jeff and her were at least completely done with each other, it wasn't as complicated between the two of them as it is at the moment. "It is what it is, Scotty. But if it wasn't for Jeff-", Liz begins seriously thinking about his question but stops herself as soon as she sees two cars crashed into one another and the ambulance in front of them.
Immediately, Scott slows down and when he reads Jeff's registration number on the car, he stops his own in the middle of the street. "Holy shit, that's a hard crash", Liz mumbles before she also realizes who this is about, "That's Jeff's number." Her voice is only a whisper and cracks as tears stream down her cheeks realizing what has happened. Jeff's had a car accident. He could be injured. No, there's the ambulance. This means he is injured.
Scott has stopped the engine by now and without thinking about it twice, Liz gets out of the car and runs to the ambulance. Scott reacts quickly and follows her still being shocked himself but he has to calm her down first. Liz can't think clearly seeing how the two men carry Jeff's injured body out of his car and into the ambulance car. "Jeff!", she calls for him but the boy can't even hear her. "Jeff!"
"Els", Scott calls for her instead grabbing her arm but she pushes him back. "What happened to him? Is he alive?", she asks the men instead. "El, you need to calm down", Scott says standing right behind her by now to make sure she won't see Jeff like that. "He's got serious injuries. We'll bring him to the hospital now", one of the man tells her as shortly as possible but Liz shakes her head.
"Is he alive?", she asks raising her voice as best as she can although it's cracked. "They're trying to do their job, Els. We've got to wait", Scott is trying to make her leave the spot but she won't stop looking at the men with tears in her eyes. Not until she's got an answer. "Is he alive?" "We had to revive him and we're giving our best to keep him alive", the man finally tells her and leaves her and Scott standing there on the streets as they get into the ambulance and drive away. These words are in Liz's head on repeat.
We had to revive him. That means he was dead, at least for a second. Jeff was dead. And they don't know if they can keep him alive. They didn't say anything about his chances. Apart from the rescue team who is working on getting the street empty again, the streets are lonely. There are only Liz who's screaming for Jeff and falling down to ground while crying for the boy she loves so deeply and Scott who's kneeling down next to her holding the girl in his arms.
