"And when you get the choice to sit out or dance, I hope you dance."
❥
Little did she know that the night of the dance, she wouldn't be as calm as she thought she would be when she sees Jeff's date. It's been a couple of days and Liz gets ready for the dance with her best friend Sheri. "I still don't understand why you turned down Jeff's offer so go to the dance together. He'll be so lost without you", Sheri complains feeling sorry for her best friend as she doesn't have a date. "I'm fine, really. I'm done by the way. When is Jason going to be here?" "Probably in five minutes. The boys?" "Monty said he would pick me up in half an hour. You know he doesn't like to be on time."
"You know what's the worst part of you and Jeff not going to the dance together?", Sheri looks at Liz with a warm smile on her lips, "You and I don't go together with our dates. You'll be around the boys all night and I will be with Jason and his friends for most of the time. It feels weird. Last year, we went to a dance with Jeff and Christian." "That's true", Liz regrets but doesn't want to think about it for too long, "I'll call you tomorrow in the morning and you tell me about it, okay?" "Deal." "And have fun. Love you, S." "You too, E."
"It feels so weird pickung you up since Jeff used to go to every dance with you", Monty states when the teenagers drive back to school where the dance would be. "Yeah but some things change", the girl shrugs looking out the window and enjoying the ride. "Why don't you go together actually? Jeff asked you, didn't he?"
"He asked me, yes.. but I couldn't say yes, not now. We're not dating and all of this would make the situation way too complicated. I told him he could ask out a girl but.. I'm scared of who he's spending the night with." "Why didn't you just say yes, Els? You're ruining it yourself", Monty groans wondering why his friends couldn't be a couple again. The boy doesn't actually believe in love but Jeff and Liz gave him an idea of what it is like.
"There's nothing to ruin, Monty. Jeff and I are friends until we go to college. You know that that's what we planned", she insisted knowing that there's a high possibility that one of them or both might fall in love with someone else or end up in different places. "You were so close to me believing in love. So close." At first, the girl thinks about his words again, but eventually, both of them laugh knowing it takes a lot more to have Montgomery de la Cruz believe in love.
Liz ends up meeting her friends Bryce, Justin, Zach and the boys' friend Alex in front of the building and enters the gym with the boys. Zach actually goes to the dance with Olivia but they've decided to meet inside as she also comes with her friends. As they go in, Liz breathes deeply and reassures herself that everything will be alright. What could go wrong?
A few minutes later, she's found an answer to that question. She's danced with all of the boys, but Monty was quickly distracted by Jen and Bryce found a girl to dance with. She ended up dancing with Justing and later standing at the buffet with the same lacing some drinks for themselves.
"Why aren't you here with Atkins?", Justin changes the topic that they were recently talking about before. "We're not dating anymore so there is no reason why we should go there together." Just like all her other friends, Justin disagrees. He knew what it was like admiring her and he knew exactly why it didn't work out. Liz doesn't even try to defend their plan anymore.
The boys have told her what they think of it many times but she doesn't care about it anymore. Whatever happens, happens. If that means that Jeff or her might find someone else to be with, she'll accept it. Still, seeing Jeff with none other girl than Leah, confused her. Liz doesn't have a problem with Leah at all, but Leah is so obsessed with Jeff that it seems like it's not about Jeff's personality but rather his status.
"Hey, Justin. Can I steal Liz away from you for a second?", none other than Jeff Atkins asks his friend when he joins them. "Sure, I was about to dance anyways. Have fun whatever you're doing", Justin replies smiling at the pair goofily. "Leah won't like seeing you with me tonight." "It's about our mission. Clay and Hannah are here. We just need to get them together." "Then how about you talk to Clay?", Liz suggests. "You need to talk to Hannah then." "No, J, that's way too obvious. Let's talk to Clay tonight so he can make the first step and it will look more like he really planned to go to her."
The Atkins' boy agrees knowing that Liz has a better feeling for this so the two of them walk over to where Clay is sitting. "Go, get her", Jeff immediately advices his friend Clay as him and Liz sit down on the bleachers. They wouldn't give up on their mission easily. "Go get her and do what?", Clay asks confused and Liz chuckles lightly. He's too shy.
"It's a dance, right? Maybe dance with her?", Jeff suggest ironically making the girl nest to him laugh. "I can't. You know I can't dance. We've talked about it", Clay insists not letting the girl's laugh confuse him. "People can't dance at dances. But Jeff and you made a bet and you lost so come on", Liz tells him easily and Clay stands up looking at Hannah who's doing the same in this moment.
Jeff and Liz stand up again as soon as they see that Clay's got enough courage to dance with Hannah. "This could be us. This used to be us", Jeff remembers. "We weren't that shy", Liz jokes not being able to deal with flashbacks tonight. "That's our song. Will you dance with me?", Jeff akss the girl instead of replying to her statement as soon as ‚The night we met' sounds.
