"Mother, I brought you your tea." I called out knocking on her door.
Ever since I had gotten home my mother has grown extremely ill. Kate could not stay for very long so I vowed to take care of her in the mean time.
"How are you feeling?" I asked setting the tray down on her bedside table.
"If I'm honest, not too great. Though I'll try my best for you darling."
I smiled meekly though it quickly faded.
"I wish there was more I could do for you mother. I hate seeing you bedridden like this."
"Nonsense my child, it is a natural part of life. Some of us just need to move on."
"Don't say that! You are not leaving, not yet at least."
My mother smiled and put a hand on my cheek. Wiping away a stray tear from my face. I hadn't even noticed my sorrowful state.
"You're right for now, I'm not going anywhere. Though you still have the right to come and go as you please. Do not let me stop you from being happy."
Those words she said flooded my heart with emotion.
"I know, but I can't just leave you like this. I've already made my decision. I'm not traveling this year."
"But what about your friends, won't they be worried?"
"I'm sure they would understand my situation mother. Besides, I would never be able to relax if I left you in this state."
We sat in silence for a few moments. My mother sat up in her bed taking a small sip of the warm tea that was next to her.
"Black tea with a hint of lemon, just the way you like it," I mumbled my eyes not meeting hers.
My mother sighed contently.
"You're truly destined for great things Jax. You still manage to surprise me everyday."
I turned my head to see her smiling into her cup. Tears glossing her eyes, threatening to spill.
"If this cup filled every time you did something remarkable, every time you were kind, every time you stepped out of your comfort zone for someone else. It would have overflowed."
I watched as her tears fell into her teacup, making a muted splash when they made contact with the beverage. Her sobs were quiet but still sorrowful. I felt my brows furrow as I walked over to her side. I gently grabbed her mug and set it on the tray. Then gave her a warm embrace.
"Everything is going to be fine."
