Immediately after visiting hours ended for the night Katie drove to the airport and picked up Chrissy's friend , she dropped him at his place, telling him she would be by for him at 8am the next day, and headed to her mom's to get a good night sleep.
Just after 8am the next day, she picked him up and filled him in on their way to the hospital. "Chrissy doesn't know you are coming" she told him. "who did this to her?" he asked... "My brother Jake.. they were together for quite awhile, things happened, he got mad and left, no one knew where he was, and he all of the sudden shows up at the house out of the blue and attacked her and Emma." she said as they searched for a parking spot.
"Emma?" he said "who's Emma?"
"Emma is Chrissy's nearly 3 week old daughter." Katie replied adding "My brother is in custody, the picked him up a few hours after the incident and he is being charged with two counts of attempted murder, and 1 count each of assault and battery and child abuse."
"I hope they throw the book at his ass!-- though even if the go easy on him if the other inmates find out what he did and that there was a child involved, his ass will be as good as dead." he said.
Katie and he walked in silence into the hospital and headed up to where Chrissy's room was. Katie had him wait in the hall while she went in and talked to her. "Doctor says I can be released today--if I have somewhere safe to stay where he won't find me." Chrissy said. "that and I have at least a couple months of physical therapy ahead of me once my knee heals from the surgery."
Katie pulled her friends hair out of her face and said, "got someone out in the hall who wants to see you."
"I don't want anyone to see me like this- I look like hell!" Chrissy whined. Before she could say anything else Katie opened the door, and he peeked around the corner.
"I.. uh.. How ..what.." Chrissy stammered " how did HE know I was here?" saying nothing, Katie motioned for him to come in and as he entered the room his heart ached seeing her battered, bandaged, stitched, and bruised.
Katie left the room to see if her mom was there with Emma yet. He pulled up a chair and sat down. After several minutes of awkward silence, Chrissy said, " how have you been?"
"ok" he replied. "busy". " My buddies and I still sing" he quickly changed the subject "how much longer are you going to be in here?"
Chrissy sighed as she felt tears in her eyes " I can go home today--IF I have somewhere to go where Jake can't find me.. doctor doesn't trust him even though he is locked up without bail."
" I don't even know where I can even go- she sighed " he knows where my little studio apartment is, he knows where my mom lives in Orlando, he obviously knows where Katie and their mom live-- there isn't really anywhere for Emma and I to go, and I am in no condition to pack up my things and move right now. She cried.
Before he could answer her, Katie and her mom came in with Emma and he watched as Chrissy's face lit up. He stayed up in Chrissy's room with her and Emma while Katie and her mom went down to grab some coffee.
"She's beautiful Chrissy" he said "look at all that hair, and those lashes." hearing Chrissy giggle he turned to see what was so funny, his face reddened when he realized that Chrissy was breastfeeding Emma. He politely turned away and read a magazine until she was done.
"Sorry about that Chrissy said, she was hungry." HE just laughed.
"I have plenty of room at my place, and its in the middle of nowhere, if you two would like to stay there until you are back on your feet Chrissy- my sister is staying there with me right now so that it isn't empty when I am gone., and not to worry, I have a security system, not that he could ever find the place. "hell, the pizza guy can't even find the place" he laughed.
"after everything I put you through, you would do that for me?" Chrissy said incredulously.
"absolutely" he said.. "that's what friends are for." then he added "When we split up, I told you I would always be there for you, if you needed me."
3 hours later Chrissy was released from the hospital, she and Katie along with Emma stopped at Chrissy's long enough to grab Emma's baby things- diapers wipes, clothes, blankets, playpen, toys, and what not along with Chrissy clothes, shoes and personal effects- Katie told her that she and her mom would pack the rest of the stuff and get it to her later. Then Katie drove them to his place.
