In 2000, Brianna turned 10, and Amber and Kayla 6. And then there was Emma- our "wild and extremely mouthy" 12 year old. She was at that awkward in between stage -you know the one I mean-- No longer a little girl, but, not yet a teenager.
She sassed back and disobeyed us at every turn. And at least twice a week Jon and I were down at her school meeting with the principal because of her mouthiness or because she was cutting class.
In March, she spent every day after school in detention and that still did nothing for her attitude. She started blasting guns n roses every chance she got. We were totally at our wits end and getting more stressed out by the minute.
One afternoon, in early April, I ran to the store for a few things and she stayed home and sulked cause I wouldn't let her go to a friend's party as there was going to be no parental supervision. When I returned she was still holed up in her room with her music blasting.
I put the few things I had bought away in the kitchen and went to put the shampoo, body wash, and toilet paper in the bathroom. I locked the door behind me as my heart began to pound at what I was about to do.
I pulled the small box from my bag and followed the directions and waited-very impatiently. The phone rang and Brianna hollered that it was for me so I left the bathroom to quickly take the call- as I hung up with Mariah, Emma appeared in the kitchen doorway and spat angrily "THAT IS NASTY--YOU DISGUST ME!!!!" and threw something at me before turning on her heel and running back to her room.
I reached over by the counter and picked up what she had thrown- it was the test I had taken and when I looked at it, it had a very clear plus sign! I called my doctor's office and made an appointment for that afternoon and she confirmed what the test told me ....I was pregnant and just entering my second trimester.(I just figured all the headaches, muscle aches, nausea, heartburn and indigestion were being caused by all the stress Emma was giving us)
I was thrilled!- I mean Jon and I weren't really trying to have a baby, but, at the same time we weren't doing anything to not get pregnant either. 45 minutes later I was on my way to Jon's jobsite with the ultrasound photo and an envelope that told us what we were having.
I pulled up around front and Jim spotted me right away. "Jon's up on a ladder putting up one of the last ceiling fans--don't startle him" he chuckled. I went inside Just as Jim hollered it was time for lunch- a blonde guy darted out the back door quickly and I smiled as I saw Jon climb down from the ladder.
"Trouble with Emma again?" he asked - "she's being bratty as usual" I giggled "same old same old" he sighed grabbing his lunch.
We sat on the tailgate of his truck as he ate, it was a gorgeous day. "oh, I almost forgot- I have something to show you" I said nervously as I reached into my pocket. Jon turned around and looked at me as he had just hopped down to grab his hard hat as it had fallen to the ground.
"it's a picture I got taken today." "oooh! let me see--is it indecent?" he whispered "not exactly-- the person's not wearing anything though." I laughed. Jon got a very puzzled look on his face as handed him the envelope with the picture.
"oh!" he laughed its just an ultrasound photo-- I thought it was going to be a picture of you. He said feigning sadness. He started to say something else but stopped suddenly as what he had said about the picture sunk in.
"an ultrasound photo?!" he said his voice trembling--"you mean...?" I nodded and said softly "we're going to have a baby."
"oh honey" he said helping me down and drawing me close to him as he held me I could see tears in his beautiful hazel eyes. "I can't believe it." he kissed me tenderly and softly. Jim cleared his throat and said "lunch is over Jon we need to get back to work."
