Chapter 9

After trashing the place the four friends packed materials and food and started the adventure to find the materials for gunpowder. Along the way, Senku used a device called a sextant which is used to determine the time and one's location. However, it was total garbage.

"Hmph, are there really no landmarks?" Taiju asked.

"All the metal has rusted away. There is nothing left," Senku said.

"We should, in theory, have come across Kamakura's landmark," Miku says.

The other three looked at her in shock. The three started to run in a certain direction with Miku running after them.

"Over there! Why is it that there aren't any trees at all?" Yuzuriha asked.

Once they go into the clearing senku says, "I know where we are. 35 degrees 19' North. 139 degrees 32' East!"

The four friends stand before the great Buddha statue. Yuzuriha starts crying making Taiju worry. After Yuzuriha calmed down and explained how she just woke up and seeing the Buddha statue made this stone world seem even more real. Senku, Miku, and Taiju comfort her by saying how they are going to bring back humanity. Taiju then went on to say how the Buddha statue is still standing. Senku then explained why.

"It's because the Great Buddha is made of bronze. It's only that it lacked the chemical reaction to break apart."

"Look! Only around the Great Buddha is there no greenery. Isn't it like it made it easier for us to find it!?" Taiju said.

"Well, no that's because the copper ions spread out. It's poisonous to most forms of vegetation. That's right! Bronze! I can make a mirror out of that! I can then increase the accuracy of that garbage sextant," Senku says while going towards the Great Buddha statue.

However, he gets pulled back by a powerful force. Senku looks behind him to see who stopped him from getting the bronze. He immediately gets scared by the glare Miku is giving him.

"You will not touch the statue," Miku says in a serious tone.

After that, the four friends continue on. The boys in the front and the girls in the back. Miku took the liberty of catching Yuzuriha up on what's been happening.

"So you haven't told him yet?" Yuzuriha asks.

Miku just sighs and hangs her head, "No. I'm so pathetic. I can talk to him when I'm around other people but if it's just us two, I become shy and quiet. Even if I do talk to him I become embarrassed and storm off. Besides, as if he'll ever see me as more than just a friend."

Yuzuriha smiles and says, "Well, you'll never know unless you try."

"Hey what are you guys talking about?" Taiju asks.

"Oh, you know girl stuff," Yuzuriha response.

A couple of days later Yuzuriha, Senku, and Miku were on a raft while Taiju pulled it across a river. Taiju then noticed that a part of Yuzuriha's foot was still stone. Once they all made it to shore Taiju poured some miracle liquid on Yuzuriha's foot.

"It's cold! It's kind of starting to hurt a bit," Yuzuriha said.

"Woah, is this some kind of exhaustion from the revival?!" Taiju said.

"That's would be wrong. That's just the small damage that's left after returning from petrification. We also have a few that showed up on our faces" Senku explains.

Taiju feels the crack on his face while Miku looks at the heart swirls on her left arm.

Soon the four friends finally made it to Hakone. Taiju made a wall out of sticks and the four friends were in the hot spring just relaxing.

"Ahhh this feels so good," Miku says.

"You can say that again," Yuzuriha said.

"We didn't come here to take a bath you two. As Japan is a country with many volcanoes, we came to this hot spring for the gunpowder ingredient sulfur. It's free for all bargain sale. This is good versus Tsukasa, the ultimate warrior. This is the birth of black gunpowder," Senku states.

"I'll go with you to collect sulfur," Miku said.

So Miku and Senku both got a hammer and started collecting sulfur. They were at it for a good while until Miku broke the silence.

"Hey Senku."

Senku doesn't stop what he's doing but responses, "Yeah Miku."

"Y-you're a really good f-friend. And you're an a-amazing guy."

"You're a good friend too. You're the only one who probably understands how to make gunpowder. I remember overhearing you wanted to not only make machines but weapons as well."

"That's right. My mom was always working so my grandfather was the one who took care of me over the summer. He taught us a lot about the different types of weapons. From the simple use of a knife to how to use a shotgun."

Senku looks up at Miku. He notices that her hair is down and has gotten longer. 'She looks so focused. Miku really is an amazing girl.' Senku shakes his head to get rid of the thoughts and continues digging.
