Bonfire Night Special
(This is in the past- it's about the 11th of November in the book (as you'd know if you read the update of Luke's Letters) and so this is showing you what they did on Guy Fawks night.)
| 1st November |
Megan hummed a tune as she poured sugar, flour and cinnamon into the bowl, the eggs plopping in before switching on the mixer and letting the dry and wet ingredients mix. Mali entered the room, the sleeves of her woollen dress rolled up, hair in a very messy bun, cheeks rosy and glue all over her hands and arms.
"Any juice?"
"The fridge." Both girls grinned at each other, equally excited about the weeks events leading up to their favourite festival. Bonfire night.
"Thanks babe." Mali left the room again as Meg added milk to the mixture.
"Lo? Come help with the cakes for a sec!" Megan called, Lauren arriving almost instantly, her jumper covered in paint and glue.Whilst Meg was baking cinnamon buns, the other three were making signs for the field. Each day everyone had a team and a project to fulfil, instructed and lead by Ashton and Anne.
"Want me to tip the mixture into bun cases?" Meg grinned, nodding at the girl opposite her as she rattled around for tins.
"Should I use muffin cases or bun cases?" Lauren mused. "Because I want big cakes but that means there will be less."
"Um, well... Use muffin cases because Cal and Jay are making chocolate fairy cakes tomorrow." Lo nodded, eyes brightening at the sound of Calum's name. Megan smiled to herself, noticing the change in light in her eyes; it was a small change, but it was still something. Soon the cakes were in their cases, in the tins and in the oven, Megan brushing her hands on her apron as Lauren set the timer for 20 minutes.
"Good work, Lo-Lo." Meg grabbed a juice from the fridge on her way out the room, Lauren following behind. The two entered the cluttered room, Megan gasping at the sight of several finished signs, all placed on plastic sheets on the floor, paint of all colours staining the clothes and gloves of the two girls in the room. There was soft music in the background, sketched ideas taped onto the wall in front of the 'work area' with small colour pallets beneath giving a small idea of what was going on in the room. Lauren smiled at the girls as the look of pleasure filled their faces, Megan just gawping at the sight. Templates of text and pictures and planks of wood laid next to Jess, paintbrushes and acrylics laid beside Mali, the area beside Lauren full off glitter, coloured pens, ribbon and stickers. The whole room had transformed throughout the day, forming a somewhat beautiful space full of the things all three enjoyed.
"It's incredible, girls." Meg gushed, shaking her head in surprise.
"Shocked?" Jess teased, her face shining in the light, happiness evident in her features. She was in her element.
"Very, you went all out. And all I did was make cinnamon buns, smoothies and chocolate twirls." Mali laughed.
"Oh honey, you've done just as much as we have. The stress you had earlier because Ashton couldn't buy the right damn sugar was as bad as Jess' freak when Niall trod on her first attempt at a bonfire painting." Megan giggled, shaking her head at the thought of Jess screaming at Niall.
"We're lucky they were just building the the bonfire and happy to run errands for us to be honest. We could have been all over the country trying to find the right shit- we're lucky they just see and buy and give. We'd be worse if we were given the choice, ladies." Lauren winked at Jess, knowing how picky she was about her art.
"Anyway, let me show you the signs we did." Jess got up, wiping her hands on a dirty rag hanging on the radiator. "We did: two 'This Way's, a 'Welcome', a 'Down the Hill', a 'Drinks and Snacks', and a 'Bonfire'."
"They're amazing. I love the little illustrations and the black background with white writing and the mini fireworks in the background. I love the ribbons as well- they make it cute. And the text is a great shape and size and the arrow shape of the sign is good too. Very proud." Lo grinned at Megan, her heart warming at the compliment. They'd spent over 6 hours doing them all and hearing that their work had paid off was a relief to hear.
