Vex rubbed his eyes. He sat at the counter with newspapers spread about. On his third coffee with a douse of whiskey to calm his nerves. All night he's been reading through all of them. And none of them showed what he wanted to see. He would read them again in hopes something in the ink would change. However, he knew that rereading the paper would only anger him more.
The sun was rising as well, ending his night of reading the newspapers. Like the previous nights before he collected the newspapers and read through them all. And like today they all had the same topic for the front header. No change. And it was pissing Vex off.
Lia's alarm was about to go off anytime now as the sun was rising. That too, along with the whisky in his coffee, was helping to calm his nerves. Lia always calmed his nerves. She's like a sleeping medicine with no side effects. Even the sound of her small feet quietly tapping across the floor can have his anger and stress slipping away, leaving him in only happy thoughts.
Vex ignored the alarm clock that went off in the bedroom, still hold one of the papers in his hand tightly. He did not think any of this through. Was he even thinking at all? He always had a plan. Everything he did always turn out smoothly. Thats Vex, the smooth man who could plan out every detail and walk out with no strings.
Maybe love does make you sometimes blind... No. He was not blind. He was stupid.
Really fucking stupid, Damian adds in their thoughts. Vex could almost feel him scratching at the walls of his skull.
Vex skimmed over the newspapers again. Sipping his 'coffee'.
'Lia's body still missing' one says.
'The search for the monster continues!' says another.
'Lia's family wait for justice' Vex scoffed at that one.
None of her family don't even know what her tombstone looks like.
"You weren't in bed last night..."
Vex looked over the paper and saw lia across the small island. Her hair was messy and her cheeks were rosy. Putting the paper down he got out of his chair. His legs walked him up to Lia who was looking at him with a smile. Even with the smile Vex knew that Lia was a little upset. Lia never liked to sleep alone.
Bringing his arm around her he brung her in for a warm hug. Lia's arms wrapped themselves around his waist as her head leaned into him.
Vex almost wanted to hum, loving how small she was.
Pushing her away slightly to look at her face Vex looked at her soft features. His eyes moved to hers, admiring her dark chocolate eyes. He pulled his hand up to her cheek and palmed it gently, moving his thumb across is slightly.
"I'm sorry my little rose," he kissed the top of her head before continuing. "This is my last night that I'll stay up." He let out a breath of frustration as he shook his head. "I just hate it when I can't keep promises."
Lia grabbed Vex's hand that was on her cheek, holding it tightly. "I don't mind." She whispered.
Vex let her slip out of his grasp. Before going to the fridge she put a light kiss on his arm. Vex can only guess that she does this because she's too short to reach his cheek. The thought made him smile.
He walked back over to get his coffee from the counter and got back in his seat. Pushing the papers away he set his elbows on the island and slouched over slightly.
He glanced out the slider door opposite of the kitchen and looked out into the grassy field. A couple cows were grazing close by. If you're eyes were as good as Vex's you could even see the Greg, the farmer, already on his tractor. The sights were beautiful. The house had many windows so every morning the whole house would light up in a bright orange tint with all the stained wood the light could bounce off.
