[yuna p.o.v.]
do you ever feel like something really bad is about to happen? she felt it today. yuna thought it would be something like hueningkai ditching me after extra class but it didn't happen. she's always been paranoid and anxious, and she knows that, and she can't help it.
making notes for her friends was also a tough challenge. there are 2 outcomes: she might end up with eye-catching and good notes or she might spend too much doodling and my notebook would become a sketchbook. she was writing notes for ryujin when suddenly mom's phone rings, snapping myself from my focus.
mom picks it up with a concerned face.
'hello, yes, this is shin residence.'
there was a long and dangerous silence before she silently replied to the caller with 'okay. i'll be there right away.'
'something came up in the hospital. hongjun, let's go.' mom says, grabbing her jacket from the hanger and leaving the house, with dad trailing behind her.
it was only yuna and bona. i looked at her, and she seemed to read my mind. bona walked over to yuna, sat on the couch and played with her long hair.
'don't think of that. she's gonna be fine.' bona aays, smiling the way mom jina does.
jina, yuna's younger sister, has been hospitalized for awhile now. she was diagnosed with hivs a few years ago. luckily, she received treatment quickly and she's fine, but it was too risky to discharge her since her immune system is the weakest among all of us. there were a few times where mom and dad were called to the hospital late at night, but never had mom seem so afraid.
she settled on the sofa and she curled myself, letting my face sink onto my knees. it was involuntary, and silently crying, and she only realized it when bona lifted my face and let me cry onto her shoulder.
mom has always told us the possibilities and what would happen if she didn't.. survive. but she never expected it to happen. nor expected it to happen so early. she's 11!
and even after being diagnosed, she never seemed down. everytime they visited her, she would ask me about the current celebrity news and her favourite bands. yuna promised her that when she's discharged, she would take her to a k-pop concert with bona. bona promised her that when she's discharged, they would go to jeju island, jina's dream vacation. they promised her a lot of things, and it was like the only things that kept her going and motivated.
she would always buy her postcards from every country we visited. you heard it, postcards. sometimes yuna wondered if she's my younger sister or my grandmother. she also loved eating pocky, and she would do the pepero challenges with her all the time to cheer her up.
yuna always thought that what made her so special was how strong the girl really was. she gets injected, had surgeries and severe injuries so often but she always manages to keep her cute smile on her face. whereas yuna, my biggest fear is a needle. she always teased her about it, and in return i would tickle her.
bona's right. she's always right. jina will be fine.
we spent hours just next to each other, enjoying our presence. as much as bona and jina annoys me, and yuna annoyed both of them back, she really did love her sisters.it was now 0:00 am. none of us felt sleepy since we were used to pulling an all-nighter to study. suddenly, mom and dad shuffles back into the house. for once, yuna never felt so anxious just seeing her own parents return.
her mother's eyes stinged with read, and she held wrinkled tissues. her dad looked gloomy, an expression yuna never thought he would have one day.
'yuna, bona, i think you knew what happened.' the words left her mother's lips.
it can't be.
'jina's gone.' mom breathes out. and yuna could feel the whole word just freeze right in front of my eyes.
she was long gone.
