the biggest change right now (except the 'stay up to study' routine he mentioned previously) is grandad moving in. dad always told him he was an excellent baker and also loved to do golfing but he retired and now he spents his time doing bingos, sudokus and board games with himself. even though dad spent almost a month trying to convince him and the family that he was a great guy, it really was the only thing he did.the only time he did strike a conversation with him was when he asks me to pass the cups or whether there was any newspapers left in school. mom says he's always staring because he misses grandma. okay, so he reads novels, newspapers and does crossword puzzles, but those were distractions. the man would stare out the window until he was dozed off. of course, there was nothing wrong with anything he was doing. it just seemed so.. boring.
lea didn't make any real effort to talk to him, since she's too busy with the bakery and college. it seems like mom is the only one really willing to talk to him. hueningkai wasn't the only one who feels the awkward tension between us and grandad. dad was no help either. he didn't even know why he moved in.
it was saturday and he just finished group study with class. yuna and i were walking home the same path, and she was bickering about the boys requesting tutor lessons from her. he couldn't tell if it was her trying to make him jealous (which wasn't working at all) or if shes just bragging. probably both.
"i'm gonna tutor minhee and junho today, then tomorow it's taehyun and beomgyu. fortunately bona is willing to fill in for my shifts even though she has alot of work for college. she's such a great sister." she sighs, cupping her cheeks
taehyun and beomgyu? he never thought they would jump in the bandwagon. they know how much he disliked her, and taehyun gets average grades.
"but i feel like while doing so, some girls might think i'm a playgirl and trying to hit on the guys, which i'm not! i heard a few girls the other day talking about me in a hearing distance, and they even have the guts to call me a whore!"
"that was harsh." he said blankly.
"see? you understand me. besides i'm only hitting on-" she states, but closes her mouth quickly as possible.
he looked at her, his eyes pleading for an answer. he hoped she didn't intend to say his name. if she said his name, he'll lost his cool.
"oh! i gotta go it's uh - time for my shift! see you later kai!" she stutters over her words, her pale cheeks slowly flushing red. she nearly trips running over to the art store, shutting the door harshly in embarrassment.
no. she still likes him.
he tried to shake off the thought and walked back home, ringing the bell that he heard every single day. he made myself a bowl of cereal and settled myself on the sofa, scrolling through the channels, even though nothing i liked was on. maybe i should try netflix. that's what lea always watches with her ex.
grandad stumbles down the staircase, holding a cup of coffee. and he was back on the armchair, right next to the window, staring at the neighborhood. it was quiet since i was watching buzzfeed unsolved and grandad was doing.. whatever he was doing. he always asked himself what he was looking at until he said this.
"son, come over here." he motioned. hueningkai walked over and sat on a chair, facing him. this was my first real conversation with him. he held his hands together in excitement. maybe grandad was an interesting guy who had a lot to tell during his time as a soldier or something.
"what's the girl's name?"
"w-who?"
"the one you came home with."
"oh. shin yuna."
"tell me about shin yuna."
"she's not exactly my friend-"
"why isn't she your friend?"
"because.. you'd have to know her well. she's a know-it-all, show-off and a pain."
"is that so? well, could be great help with those artistic skills. maybe she could design our packaging." he says, not taking consideration of what hueningkai was saying. he was looking at yuna paint a bunch of pretty sunflowers on the walls of the art store.
"and she's been stalking me since 2nd grade!"
"a girl like that doesn't live next to everyone."
"lucky them." he mumbled to no one.
he was now staring at me. hueningkai was about to stare back and ask "what?" when he couldn't take it anymore. he only wanted to talk to me about yuna. the girl i've always despised. he bowed and made his way back to sofa.
during dinner, he didn't asked to pass the plates, and if he did, there would be a huge possibility that he would toss it at him. mom sensed the tension and kept looking at him and grandad. dad and lea were in business as usual, talking about stocks and stuff.
after dinner, he laid in bed, rewinding everything that happened today. what was so special about her? yea, he guessed she's pretty good at drawing, averagely looking, and smart, but in return, she'll only follow you around like a mosquito.
he didn't even consider the way he was thinking was wrong.
before he realized it, i was dozed off into a dreamless sleep.
