Protecting Mr. Wimp

Chapter 11

"Set it at the table over there. No, not like that, it's-" Katherine Travis instructed the maids while Gina and Michael sat across from her. Both staring at the woman that was on some kind of major freak-out moment. "No, that vase isn't suppose to go there, it was supposed to be in the dining hall. I thought I already told you that, dear." She shook her head, and the maid stared at her feet, frowning. "It's okay, no harm done. Now, go put it in the dining hall." The maid nodded and headed off.

Michael and Gina blinked simultaneously, Mrs. Travis sure looked like she could use some rest right now. They both watched her pace around the house instructing the staff about what should go where and how it should be placed. To say that they were confused would be an understatement.

They had been here since and hour or so, they ate, freshened-up and met Mrs. Travis at the living room where their 'meeting' was held. But so far, the meeting wasn't getting anywhere.

Gina nudged Michael and whispered, "How long will this keep up?"

He whispered back, "I have no idea. Whatever mom has in mind is sure serious or something."

"It looks like she's preparing for a storm."

"But the fact is that she isn't, it looks something bigger than a storm."

"Yeah, like... like a party?"

"Yeah!" Michael's face lightened up.

Gina shot him a flat look, "Is that all you can think about?"

"Hey, you suggested that it could be a party." He defended.

She rolled her eyes at him, "You're the one that got all excited about it."

He gaped at her, "I haven't been in a party for years!"

She scoffed, "Oh please, it has barely been months."

"It's not like you've been to any." He mumbled but she heard.

She glared at him, "What's that suppose to mean?"

"It means-"

"I know what it means!" She snapped.

"What are you two whispering about?" Mrs. Travis interjected, raising an eyebrow at them.

Gina laughed awkwardly and said, "Uh, nothing important."

Michael rolled his eyes at her, "She's never been to parties."

She shot him a glare then turn to Mrs. Travis, grinning sheepishly while Mrs. Travis's expression stayed the same, a raised eyebrow. Like she was expecting something valid.

Gina stopped grinning and stared at her hands, feeling some-what nervous while Michael looked amused at Gina's actions. Mrs. Travis chuckled and Gina's head snapped up to look at her, confused.

"There's nothing to be nervous about, dear. I'm not going to interrogate you on the amount of people you've murdered." Mrs. Travis said, giving Gina a genuine smile.

Gina looked shocked at Mrs. Travis's warm behaviour towards her, she wasn't used to this but she quickly composed herself and answered, "Um, I'm just not used to talking... um... nicely?"

"That's okay, dear. I completely understand, when I was your age-"

"Mom, sorry to interrupt you," Michael started, cutting off Mrs. Travis, "But, could you skip the 'when I was your age' stuff and tell us why you really called us here?"

Michael's mom glared at him but sighed, "Okay, but don't take this lightly, this is a really serious matter." She gave them both a stern look and they nodded seriously, ready to listen to whatever Mrs. Travis had to tell them.

A few minutes later...

They both stared at her wide eyed, un-able to believe what she told them.

"What?!" They both cried out in unison.

"Mom you can't be-"

"This isn't-"

"We thought-"

"You said-"

"What?!" They both cried out again.

"Calm down," Mrs. Travis told them, looking at them in alarm, "It isn't that serious."

"What were you thinking when you said 'yes' mom?" Michael asked, looking at his mother in bewilderment.

"This is unacceptable, Mrs. Travis. I'm sorry, but this isn't what you hired me for." Gina said.

"I hired you to protect my son, and that is what you are going to do." Mrs. Travis said, "And, Michael, it's not that horrifying. Just think about it."

"I am thinking about it, but I'm pretty sure you didn't."

She rolled her eyes at him, "It's alright, Michael. And besides, you won't have to do it again, it's just this once."

"But mom-"

"No, buts young man. Now, you go upstairs and get ready right now." His mom ordered, giving him a stern look.

His shoulders sagged in dismay, knowing his mom had put her foot down. She's not going to change her mind now. Sighing, he marched upstairs to his room.

Mrs. Travis watched her son leave than turned to Gina, "Now, do you want to waste both of our times and argue?"Gina quickly shook her head. She now knew that Mrs. Travis was a dangerous woman."Good. I'll see you tonight, dear." She gave Gina a warm smile and headed off to instruct the staff again.

Gina watched her leave and smiled to herself. She wished she had a mother like Mrs. Travis.

"Ugh, this is sticking on to me like  a second skin. Why is it so tight?" Gina grunted to the maid, examining herself in the mirror. She was wearing a glittery floor-length green dress that fitted her perfectly.

"I'm sorry, ma'am but it's what the Mistress wants you to wear." The maid looked at Gina apologetically.

"Don't you have anything else? Something that doesn't make me look like some kind of snake?"

The maid shook her head, "This was the only one that was made for you. I personally, think you look astounding ma'am."

Gina turned to look at the maid with a small smile, "Gina."

"I beg your pardon?" The maid looked at her confusedly.

"Call me Gina please," Then she added silently, "I'm just like one of you."

The maid heard her and shook her head, looking at her like she'd lost her mind, "You look like royality, ma'am. I could never imagine you to be like one of us."

Gina turned back to the mirror to look at her reflection, "Maybe once, but not anymore."

"What do you mean?"

"Forget it." Gina immediately said, realizing she just blurted out too much, "Is it time yet?"

The maid gasped, "Oh my, we're late. Come, we must hurry!"Gina quickly looked at the watch to see that there were still ten minutes left till she had to make her entrance, "Hurry ma'am!"

Rolling her eyes at the maid's melodramatic behaviour she followed her out the door thinking, 'Here goes nothing.'
