Chapter Twenty - Attempts on Confession

'So what if you can see the darkest side of me

No one will ever change this animal I have become

Help me believe it's not the real me

Somebody help me tame this animal I have become!'

Envy sat on the edge of the small fountain in the school's courtyard, nodding slightly to the music he was listening to. The song reminded him of himself, and maybe of Dawn too. It suddenly stopped playing. Envy pulled a face, fishing the iPod out of his pocket.

0% CHARGE

It was useless now. And the song haden't even finished. Envy tugged the headphones out of his ears and stuffed the device back into his pocket and was about to get up and leave when;

"ENVY!"

The shout took him by complete surprise, making him trip and fall backwards into the fountain with a loud splash. Erin ran up and gasped, but couldn't help the smile which spread on her face. She extended a hand, helping the dazed homunculus out of the water. She blushed as he stood only inches from her, dripping wet and angry.

"dammit!'' he muttered, looking down at his soaked clothes.

"I'm so sorry!" Erin apologised the best she could. She wasn't counting on him falling backwards into the school fountain, just before she had to ask him something important. Lunch was almost over, and she had gotten away with putting up the streamers in the gym just to talk to Envy. "I-I didn't mean too scare you like that!"

Envy looked up at Erin and smiled. He took his vest off and wringed it out to one side. Erin couldn't stop her eyes from trailing down to his chest. Envy, on the other hand was completely oblivious and slung the vest over his shoulder. He glanced back at the girl standing in front of him.

"What's up?"

Erin glued her gaze away from him and looked down at the ground, a little nervous.

"I..wanted to say thank you for saving me from that perv Brad" she said quietly. "You didn't have to do that"

"Maybe, but he doesn't deserve a girl like you" Envy grinned. The wet clothes sticking to his skin were not bothering him as much when he wasn't thinking about it. "And you don't deserve to get treated like that. Besides the point, I should be the one thanking you"

"Huh?" Erin looked up to face him. "Why?"

"You took the blame and ended up in isolation."

"O-oh. That was nothing" Erin giggled shyly. She didn't know a sin like him would even care about the thing she had done. "So about the dance..are you going with anyone?"

"No"

Erin suddenly felt butterflies in her stomach. Her heart started to dance in her chest. Her dream guy didn't have a date to the School Dance, he was all her's for the taking....

"Really?"

"I'm not going"

...Erin's heart sunk, falling to the bottom of her chest along with her smile. How-Why-NO! This was her only chance to really say how she felt, what she felt for the homunculus, and all of that was about to be ruined.

"Why?" She asked, staring at Envy with puppy eyes. He, as usual was totally unaware of her loving stare.

"I don't dance. Or party. Besides no girl would ever go out with me, even if I wanted it." Envy explained, completely oblivious to the painful facial expressions the girl in front of him pulled. Erin felt like slapping some sense into him and screaming how she'd love to go with him, how she wanted to be asked out by him, and he was too blind to see the opportunity before him.
