Set in Season 4 Episode 13 The Sky is Falling. Small note: doesn't entirely follow canon.
News of mass shootings had been circulating all morning, Firehouse 51 had been on edge all day and each call out had their hearts jump into their mouths hoping that it wouldn't be to someone they knew. This call out had some familiarity to them. It was your apartment building. Dread filled their stomachs and Squad kept looking to Kelly who was calling you, but you weren't answering. Arriving outside it was dead silent. There was a sheet hanging in the window but from this distance they couldn't see what was on it. They all hopped out and as the occupants of Firehouse 51 looked up at the apartment building, shots rang out. Ducking instinctively, they raced behind the trucks. Carefully looking out they saw a shooter up on the higher floor, peaking out of a window firing down at them.
The wailing sirens drew nearer and nearer. Severide's friend Alex showed up with some police. The shooter's gun jammed, and several residents took that as an opportunity to run to the fire trucks for cover. Hermann, Casey, Kelly ran forwards to help them when the gun shots started again. Kelly noticed a young woman sneaking towards the apartment building. He furrowed his brows at her actions when she got hit. She shrieked in pain but still attempted to crawl toward the building. Kelly dashed forwards when the gun jammed a second time and the firefighters dashed into the building to put out the fire and Brett and Chili moved to help the wounded that would surely be in the building.
Kelly raced to the young woman's side and was shocked to see it was you, his younger sister. He gathered you into his arms and raced towards an off-duty doctor who had seen the commotion and had raced over to help. "Y/N, what are you doing? There's a shooter in there?" You groaned as the doctor applied pressure to the wound in your leg. "Laura's in there." Kelly stiffened. Your daughter, Laura Elizabeth Severide, he nodded, "We'll find her, she'll be okay." Kelly promised before he himself dashed into the building. Casey informed Boden that everyone was okay, Kelly had before he dashed into the building sent a text around to everyone informing them that Laura, your daughter was in the building.
Brett lay face down in a room hiding behind a sofa, holding Chili's hand tightly. They were hiding in a game room that the apartment building had, changing the unused space into something the residents could use. Both were shaking slightly. The door opened and they tensed, they had run in with some of the other firefighters when there had been a reprieve in the shots. Footsteps echoed in the room, the work boots clicking on the hard wood floor. He stopped in front of the vending machine, there was a hollow thunk of a soda can dropping to the bottom, along with a lighter clunk as a packet of chips followed. The pop fizz of the can opened echoed in the quiet room, he finished the drink, dropping the empty can on the ground. He popped the chips eating them as he left the room. They heard the shriek of a woman when she got shot, the footsteps echoed down the hall as he left. Brett and Chili left to go help her. As they crept towards her, Brett saw a pair of children's shoes peeking out behind the couch. Brett crept around as Chili helped the woman, "Laura!" Brett whispered, the small girl looked up through watery eyes and saw the blonde paramedic jumping into her arms. "We are going to get you out of here, okay?" The little girl nodded, before whispering, "daddy's the shooter." Brett swallowed, your ex-boyfriend and Laura's father was the shooter. She nodded, "we are going to get out of here okay?" Laura nodded. Brett shielded Laura as much as she could from the woman who was injured while she helped Chili.
Outside, your ex had taken to shooting at the police outside once more. Alex, Severide's agent friend had snuck in with some police dressed in firefighter grab. Alex helped Chili bring the woman down the stairs along with one of the other police officers. Brett carried Laura down to the ambulance that held you, you sobbed as your daughter wiggled out of Brett's arms and raced over to you. Charlotte, the paramedic helping treat your leg wound, helped Laura clamber up. Laura wiggled into your arms, while Charlotte shut the doors and climbed into the driver's seat taking off to Med.
In your hospital room at Med, Laura was curled into your arms fast asleep while Kelly told you what had happened while you chipped in what you knew. Voight nodded as you both gave your statements before wishing you the best and heading back to the district. Once he left the rest of Firehouse 51 filled into the room, Brett tucked a soft stuffed animal, a cheetah, into your daughter's arm. "Thanks." You told Brett, who rounded the bed and hugged you on your other side. You squeezed her tightly, "Thanks for helping my little girl. I'm so sorry that you were but in that position." Brett smiled with tears swimming in her eyes. "It's not your fault." The team stayed for a while before heading home. Kelly told you that he was staying with you for the night. He tucked a blanket around Laura before settling back on the chair he was on, "go to sleep sis." You smiled faintly at him as you felt your consciousness slip away.
