Katie bounced up the driveway to her house, the letter and permission slip clutched tightly in her hand. Excitement buoyed her up as she jumped the steps leading to her front door. The door opened after she turned the knob. Knowing her father was home, she headed straight to the kitchen after dropping her bag at the foot of the stairs. She entered the kitchen and saw her father's best friend and partner at Five-0 taskforce. Danny was sitting at the table in the middle of the room, he had a bowl of freshly cut fruit in front of him which he was eating from. "Hey, Danno." Danny rolled his eyes, "Danny." He attempted to correct the thirteen-year old. It wouldn't work, ever since Steve's daughter had met his; she had called him Danno ever since. Danny looked over at the young girl, who was clutching two pieces of paper in one hand the other was nervously fiddling with the hem of her shirt. "Your father's just outside on the phone." She nodded understanding. Katie kept the papers in her hand as she searched the fridge for something to eat.

She sat at the table next to Danny, "who's he on the phone with?" Danny ate a strawberry before he answered. "Governor." Katie made a face, that usually wasn't good, it would mean she would have to find a way to ask sweetly as to convince him to allow her to go on the field trip she had invited on. "Whatcha got?" Danny pointed to the pieces of paper in Katie's hand as she reached for a piece of fruit from the bowl. She tried to shrug nonchalantly but didn't quite get the don't really care attitude. "Something dad has to sign." Danny smirked at his partner's daughter. "What did the littlest McGarrett do? Break a window? Scale the building? Make your own tear gas and send it throughout the school?" Katie laughed at Danny's antics. "No, I electrocuted my science class." The statement was deadpan, with a no-nonsense look thrown at Danny, which stopped the track of a grape halfway to his mouth. Danny looked over at Katie who had a serious look on her face. Katie's face cracked in a wicked grin. "Kidding Danno. Its for a field trip."

Danny nodded as Steve hung up the phone as he entered the kitchen. "Kiddo." He moved over to where his daughter was sitting. He kissed the top of her head. "How was school?" Katie shrugged, "good, we started reading a new book in English. The Boy in Stripped Pyjamas." Danny pursed his lips as did Steve. "Depressing." Katie shrugged, "it has a lot of good themes to discuss." Steve noticed the pieces of paper his daughter was clutching. "What's this?" Katie handed him the papers, "field trip information and permission slip. Its for my model UN trip, we are going to New York to meet up with other model UN's from other schools." Katie finished her explanation and looked up at her father. Steve read the information sheet and looked over his daughter. "You're not going." Katie looked up at her father, "what? Why?" Steve looked down at his daughter, "because I said so." Danny winced slightly, that he had learned was not something you told your child. He had learned it was best to give a reason why.

"Because you said so?" Katie mocked, "that's not a reason. That's a pathetic excuse, when you don't actually have a reason but want to get your way." Danny raised his eyebrows while trying to sink lower in his seat, this wasn't going to go well. "Its not a pathetic excuse, don't talk to me that way." Katie stood up, "why can't I go? You told me that model UN was a good learning experience, that I would be able to learn about politics from various countries not just our own. You said that it was a good way of making friends, and that I would gain valuable skills. It seems to me that this trip would be a good way of putting these skills to use and I will meet people with different viewpoints and make friends. Isn't that what you want for me? Besides they need parent chaperones, you could be one, that way you would know where I was." Katie finished her impassioned speech with a stubborn look to her father. Danny gave a slight look of mild approval; Katie had clearly thought this through. Steve looked at daughter and nodded, "I said all that and I stand by it but you're still not going." Danny once again winces, trying and failing to sink lower, so he simply watches how this will play out. Katie squares her shoulders in a way, that reminds both men of her familial connection to one of them before she storms out of the kitchen. After a few moments, they hear a door slam both of them assumed it was Katie's bedroom door. Which means neither of them bother to check on her for the next hour. "You really have a way with kids, you know that?" Danny tells his partner, after Steve's called up the stairs a few times for his daughter. Steve began to head up the stairs with Danny following. "Because I said so? Honestly its like you want her mad at you." They both reach the closed door of Katie's bedroom, Steve knocks and waits about thirty seconds before opening the door. The room is empty, and it took longer than both men would like to admit to realise that.

Steve rushes down the stairs, transitioning from Steve McGarrett the father to Steve McGarrett the Navy SEAL. Its easier than he cares to admit but at times like this, it's a good thing. He thumbs Katie's number and presses it desperately to his ear as Danny calls Chin and Kono both of whom say they haven't seen the youngest McGarrett. The other members of Five-0 tell Danny that they'll search all the spots that Katie likes to hang out at. Steve's gone pale as he listens to his daughter's voicemail. He hangs up and calls Katie again. Danny calls Rachel who hasn't seen Katie but promises to call her, Danny knows that if Katie is screening calls, Rachel will probably be the one to make the cut. Steve hangs up for a second time, so Danny fills him in. Danny's phone rings and its Rachel, Katie didn't pick up, but Rachel promised to keep an eye on her phone in case she did call.

Danny looked over at Steve, he was tense and pacing. "What are you thinking?" Steve looked over at his partner, devastation slipping into features as he thought the worst possible events that could take place. "Steve? Where would she go?" Steve's hands shook as he rubbed his hands over his face. "Kono's? Chin's? I don't know." Danny shook his head, "she's not there. I called; they're checking other spots that Katie may be. Was there anywhere she used to go when she was younger?" It seemed to ring a bell as mild relief flooded Steve's face. Steve left with Danny following him.

Steve headed outside to the small stretch of beach that backed onto his house. "Earth to Steven?" Danny questioned; he was panicked about Katie but due to Steve's reaction was attempting to keep a lid on his emotions. Danny followed and watched as Steve moved to a medium patch of shrubs that were clustered together, they were underneath a tree. It had a hole that looked large enough for a child to crawl through, Danny thought that Katie would just about fit now days. "Katie?" Steve sounded hesitant. "What's the password?" The sentence sounded cracked, but it was Katie. Danny grinned and walked away to update everyone and give Steve some privacy. "Dad's an idiot?" Steve tried. It gained him a snort. "Katie, you had me worried." There was a muttered sorry. "Katie, can we talk about this? I'm just worried about you going so far with me. I'm willing to be a parent chaperone, but I need to think about you going so far and everything that this field trip involves." There was a rustling as Katie crawled out of her hideaway. "I'm sorry, daddy. I shouldn't have run away." Danny watched from afar as father and daughter made up and as the tension bled from his partner's shoulders.
