It was set to be a stiflingly hot day, one for the record books if you believed the weather reports. Katie checked her cell phone, a few texts from her friends in the group chat they used. They were bickering about whether they should skip school for the day and head to the beach. Katie was on the fence, while she wanted to go to the beach, she also wanted to stay on her parent's good side. She was thirteen, her parents trusted her to make good decisions, but she was also still a little reckless. Katie had a little too much of her father in her, she would often make rash decisions. Similar to this one. She typed an affirmation to her friends and packed her swimsuit and towel, as well as a few of her schoolbooks. While the schoolbooks may have been a ruse, Katie's gut twisted at the thought of lying to her parents. Having the books meant that if she changed her mind, she had what she needed for school, but a text from her friend that the classmate she had crush on could be there, strengthened her resolve a little.
She bounded down the stairs following her brother Jack, Sean was already in the dining room eating his breakfast. His two siblings dropped into their seats and began to eat their own meal. Danny Reagan, the three siblings' cop father entered the room and kissed their heads as he checked his phone about his new case. Linda, their nurse mother entered, "Danny, can you take the kids to school? I just got called in to cover a different shift." Danny gave a quick reply and swiped a piece of toast of Jack's plate. "Hey!" Danny smiled at his son, before turning and kissing his wife's lips quickly. "Taxi leaves in ten." Katie, Jack and Sean scoffed down the rest of their breakfast before placing their dishes in the dishwasher at their father's reminder. The trio raced each other up the stairs using their elbows to gain the advantage and jostled into position to brush their teeth in the cramped bathroom. The three Reagan children ran downstairs, each with their own backpack.
Danny dropped Sean off at his school, before swinging over to the high school that the eldest two attended. Katie watched from her group of friends as her father drove off and Jack ran inside to see his friends. Once her father had driven out of sight and the bell had rung, Katie and her friends used the mess of students to disappear out of the gate. They changed in the nearby park toilets. It was a half day of school for both Katie and Jack along with Sean's school. Jack was going to a friend's afterwards as was Sean, Katie had used the same excuse with her parent's, but her friends had also managed to talk her into ditching the whole day.
They caught a bus to the nearest beach. They found a secluded spot and spread out their gear. Katie and her friends went swimming, Katie went back to their gear after a little while, guilt stewing in her stomach at the thought of lying to her parents. Around midday when school had been let out, her phone buzzed, a text from her mother asking if Katie was at her friends yet. Katie replied that she was with her friends, another text came through asking her to come home earlier. Katie said that she would be home earlier.
Danny swore at whoever he was on the phone with and Baez looked up at her partner. "You okay?" She asked. Danny shook his head, "my daughter skipped school." Baez shrugged, "isn't it a half day?" Danny nodded and Baez shrugged, "so all she missed was like what three classes? Which probably went over everything she needs to know for the first-year exams." Danny looked over at his partner who was seated in the passenger seat of his car. "That's not the point she skipped school." Baez nodded, "yeah okay. How'd you find out?" Danny sighed, "Linda got a call from her school saying she hadn't attended." Baez raised her eyebrows, "so she's in serious trouble then?" Danny nodded. Baez flickered her eyes back to the building they were watching. "There's our suspect." Danny sighed and shoved his family drama to the back of his mind.
Katie hopped off the bus waving at one of her friends who was riding back to her place. She walked the several blocks it usually took to get home, it was different without Jack, Sean and one of their friends walking with her, chattering all the way. She arrived at her place and sighed when she saw her parent's cars in the driveway. Checking the letterbox as a way to bid time, she sighed when it was empty. Climbing the small set of steps, Katie adjusted her bag and opened the front door. Stepping into the lounge, she pulled off her shoes and placed them on the shoe rack by the door. Placing her bag on the couch and headed into the dinning room where her parents sat at the end of the table. Her mother sighed when she saw her daughter, the anger in her eyes dimming when she noted the guilty and twitchy look in her daughter's eyes. Her father's glare didn't soften much when he noticed that his daughter's body language and how the twitchy look often meant she had been rushed into a decision. Her mother waved at her to take a seat; Katie sat opposite her parents at the other side of the table. Katie twisted her fingers and adjusted her top, fidgeting in her spot, while the silence stretched on. She nibbled at her lip while her parents sighed, at the sight of their daughter's inner turmoil. Katie looked up her parents when her father cleared his throat. He took a deep breath. "Katie, what you did was irresponsible and thoughtless. You could have been hurt. You are in serious trouble, which we will talk about."
