Susurrus

[ so͝oˈsərəs ]

noun

whispering, murmuring, or rustling

Sora always knew she had a soulmate. It was written on her arm, the tattoo. Four words in black ink. 'Watch where you're going!' She sighed. She was going to run into her soulmate. At least she wasn't as unlucky as her sister. 'Hello, what is your name?' Those were the words written on Jina's arm.

Sora often heard Jina complain to her mother about having to be fated to someone at a restaurant or coffee shop. "You'll never know," her mom always said. Jina seemed to think that she would never marry rich, something that she always wanted.

Maybe Jina was conceited, but at least she had grounds to be. Jina was beautiful and slender with long black hair that reached her waist, wide brown eyes, a v-shaped face and small nose that any girl would die for.

Sora on the other hand, though thin, had no curves, her hair only reached her shoulders. She was rather plain, would rather wear pants than her older sister's skimpy skirts, and decided that video games were the most important thing in the world to her.

The word soulmate didn't have much meaning to her, not as much as it did in middle school. When she was twelve, she always wished for her soulmate, when she was fifteen she gave up. Grades meant freedom and she wanted that freedom. Because who needed a soulmate when she could stay out all night.

That was the promise her mother gave her. "When you turn sixteen, if you have good grades, you can stay out at the internet cafe as long as you want." So she did. Unfortunately for Sora, with her wild ideas and stone heart, her soulmate bond appeared on her sixteenth birthday. She thought it wasn't fair, just as she achieved her freedom, she was tied back down again.

Her mom surveyed her with sympathetic eyes. "It's not as bad as it could have been. Some people feel their soulmates pain, some share tastebuds, some have a string connecting each other."

"It's not bad? I can hear my soulmate talking!"

Jina laughed. "At least you can't read each other's thoughts." Sora stuck out her tongue.  Her mom nodded thoughtfully.

"It's true. I myself saw your father in my dreams, but I once knew a girl who lost all ability to see color." Sora sighed. She felt the tug at the back of her mind, a tug she didn't want. But she accepted all the same, let the golden light fill her mind, the silhouette of a boy wearing a beanie. She couldn't see his face. He whispered a hello and she ignored him, cutting off the connection.

"It doesn't do to reject your soulmate baby," her mom said. Sora didn't care.

"Why should I dedicate my life to someone I've never met. Why do I have to follow fate? What if I don't want to love him?" Her mom just smiled.

"You'll learn. They always do." Sora went to the cafe that night to play, ignoring the soft whispers at the back of her mind, and the light that threatened to pour in.
