He could see the crunched metal wrapped around the trunk of the tree like it was yesterday, the smell of gasoline and smoke filling the night air.

The accident had occurred on a road that wasn't frequented often but that night, a bunch of youngsters decided to have a show off and racing through down the street and unfortunately collided into another family vehicle.

He was off duty, he was just driving past the road when he saw the scene. On instinct, he pulled up at the corner and shook his head sadly.

"Damn, this is bad," Taehyung muttered to himself as he get off from his car.

Taehyung spun around when he saw a pair of headlights approach. Police officers nearby had arrive to control the situation while awaiting for firefighters arrivals.

He lifted a hand in greeting the two officers. "Officer Hoseok, what are the estimated timing of their arrivals?"

"Hey, Taehyung, two to three minutes." Hoseok said, when he reached him.

The remainder of the night seemed like a blur, but he remembered every detail; the cries in the back seat, the young women slumped over the steering wheel.

Taehyung could feel the anger rising in him when he couldn't get the door open despite the help of the passenger trapped inside.

He looked up and glared at Hoseok, watching him fumble through a metal box in the back of his bonnet to look for warning cone probably. He wanted to roar for the firefighters team to come fast, but he had to stay calm for the occupants of the vehicle.

The high-pitched whine of sirens could be heard in the distance, growing louder each passing second.

"Hoseok!" Taehyung yelled, "I need crowbar! Inside my car. Now!"

"Taehyung, it's not your job, you know that?! It's too dangerous! Let's wait for the team to arrive-" Hoseok yelled back.

"There's no time! I can do this! They need to get out from this wreck car fast!" He shouted then looking to the back of the flopped car after he heard a 'pop!' sound and seeing the flicker of flame getting bigger.

Time seemed to creep by in slow motion as the fire jumped along the car. Taehyung's body filled with adrenaline and he yanked at the door with every ounce of strength he had.

He didn't hear the fire engine grind to a halt behind him, he didn't even acknowledge the shouts of the firefighters rushing from the truck as well.

He pulled at the door frantically while screaming at the victims to stay strong. When Taehyung felt hands on his waist, he looked up at the window and into a pair of innocent eyes.

From the front seat to the back seat. His breath caught choke when he saw the passenger smiling at him and then he felt himself being dragged away from the vehicle.

His head darted from side to side and he glared at the firefighters pulling him back. He did protesting there was still time. Turning his attention back to the car, all Taehyung could do was stare.

The dancing flames had transformed into a blaze and the smell of gasoline was strongly overpowering.

Taehyung watched in horror as the car engulfed in fire, the sounds of anguished screaming only halting when a loud explosion pierced the night and light flashed in the dark sky.

Strong hands held him up so the concussive wave wouldn't knock him over, but Taehyung fell to his knees. He was numb and heartbroken. Taehyung was no stranger to death in his profession, but this one was preventable.

"No!! Why you reached over so late! I- I could have save-" he screamed and whined, bursting into tears before he totally collapsing on the ground.

🚑

Taehyung jerked upright in bed. The nightmare of events many months ago still plagued him despite intensive therapy and relocating.

He reached out a hand in an effort to calm the erratic tremors coursing through his body. His life and who he was had both been forever altered by that evening. The cheerful trickster boy had vanished, and in his place was a chilly husk who demanded complete accountability from everyone.

"Please... No more..." Taehyung whispered into the darkness, grabbing a bottle of water and a small white transparent box filled with pills from his nightstand and swallowing four pills quickly, "Let me rest please. It isn't my fault. I made an attempt. Not me, blame the fxcking firefighters for being late."

The drugs were taking effect quickly, causing him to black out and become helpless as he slumped back flat on his bed.
