It had been his longest day since being transferred to a new fire station, having worked two shifts in a row. There had been non-stop emergencies calls, half of the paramedics on duty has been all out since dawn.Leaving Taehyung's and his crew to cover the remote area. While Taehyung didn't mind, the day had left him cranky. He wanted nothing more than a warm shower and at least ten hours of sleep.
He drove down a remote road since the scenery always relaxed him. Even though it was the dead of the night, Taehyung rolled down his window to smelled the fragrance from the flowery bushes along the road.
Smiling slightly, he remembered summer evenings at home. He recalled the scent while chasing fireflies but his attention was suddenly drawn to flashers ahead, hazard lights on.
As he reached the vehicle, he snarled when he recognized the driver. "Fxck. I'm not stopping for this guy," Taehyung grumbled.
Suddenly he remembers his grandfather's voice as if yelling and chiding him for abandoning someone in need. So he swallowed his pride.
"Fine. Although he's pain in the ass, I'll just help out for once." he mumbled, tapping the steering wheel with his thumbs.
He reversed and pulling up behind the dark blue mini cooper. He get off and walked to the vehicle. "Warrant Officer Jeongguk," Taehyung said, fixing his cold glare on the man.
"Hey Tae, I'm shocked you reversed back." Jeongguk said, surprised to see the red suv passing by and reversed back, and to see Taehyung to drop out just to see him. "We are off duty. Just call me Jeongguk.."
"You dumbass," Taehyung muttered, "Looks like your tyres seized up?"
"I've been busy to inspect."
"Busy with what? Sitting around the firehouse all day with your thumb up your ass?" Taehyung mocked him.
"If you've come to belittle me, you can just leave." Jeongguk retorted not believing the words coming from Taehyung.
"I've come to offer you a ride, just know I have my reasons for helping out. Nothing else." Taehyung said looking away before returning to his car.
Jeongguk then quickly grab his bag and runs to Taehyung's car and sat into the front seat, not forgetting to buckling his belt. Not saying a word, Taehyung put the car in gear and drove off.
"Did you have a lot of calls today?"
Silence.
"I'm trying to be friendly here, Taehyung." Jeongguk revealed.
"I don't need your friendship." Taehyung snarled.
Jeongguk sighed and looked at the picture taped near the odometer. Squinting his eyes, he saw a family with four young children. It was the same copy he'd seen in the newspaper after regarding the tragic accident that occurred in the central business district area.
"Tae" he started, "Why do you have that?" Jeongguk questioned, pointing at the picture.
Silence.
"Isn't it agony? You did all you could. Nothing would have changed." Jeongguk said quietly.
"You don't know shit."
"I mean.. You got stuck with the worst kind of partner but it doesn't make all firefighters bad apples." he explained.
"Drop it." Taehyung expressions turns to stone.
"Have you gotten help? This anger is going to destroy you, Tae-"
The car screeched to a halt suddenly, Taehyung reaching over Jeongguk and opening the door. His face was a mask of rage and his chest was heaving in anger.
"Out. Now. My generosity ends here. You may walk home. I don't give a fxck what you do!" Taehyung demanded and back into his seat.
Jeongguk get off and watched the car bolt off until he could no longer see the tail lights. He thought it was kind of Taehyung to give him a ride home and hoped he could crack the man's shell, but he's wrong.
Well, he has no idea Taehyung was living in the past, still torturing himself and barely surviving. While Jeongguk had never been in such a traumatic situation, he knew what it feels to lose someone. It tore him, but eventually he learned to let go, striving to do better next time.
But, for Taehyung, he had six ghosts haunting him every minute of every day....
