Twenty Two - Purple rings

Flashbacks to 3 years ago ~

"Congratulations you two!" Seokjin congratulates us with his brilliant smile.

"I hope you're happy as Seokjin and I." Namjoon chimed in, hands on Seokjin's waist.

"We're invited to the wedding right?" Yoongi asked hopefully.

Jeongguk and Kat laughed. "Of course you're invited!" he told his buddy. "Everyone and our classmates included. Kat will hand deliver the invites once we've set a date. We were thinking... April right?" he asked her.

"No... That's next month!" Kat arches an eyebrow at me, and purses her lip, "It's in December.. I like the idea of a spring wedding."

Kat or her full name Katie Leung. She's very pretty and smart, she carries with her the charm that comes natural to her, she has elegant appearance, peaceful and gentle manner. All and all, a very classic chinese american beauty. I fell in love with her.

We casually met for a group project then suddenly Cupid arrow struck us, I guess?
After we graduated, I was determined to stay by her side, so after three years of dating, today is the day I entreated her to become Mrs Jeon. That is why I insisted everyone come to the Bar because I wanted to celebrate properly.

"Now, everyone let's have a toast. Gguk-ah.. soon you won't be bachelor no more. You will be a responsible husband to Kat. We hope this change in life makes you happy." Yoongi sheepishly chuckled.

"To Jeongguk and Kat," the group cheered. I smiled at all of them and glanced at Kat. She's blushing! Instantly she slides smoothly onto my lap as I held her close to me. Then she held up her left hand with the sparkling purple ring glittering on it. "I loveeee this beautiful ring so much. But I love you more!" She murmured onto my ears and press a kissed to my cheek.

"Now let's bounce, we've got a whole night to party! Can I get a picture of you two?" One of our classmates asked and we agreed. Hands on each other waist and we both raised up our fingers to show off our purple engagement ring.

As we look into each other eyes, I still can't believe a few months from now, she will be my wife. Well, love is a thing that can never go wrong. Right?

Two months after their engagement ~

"Do you know how many times I've told you I loved you?"

"Countless." Jeongguk said softly, and Kat sighed.

"And do you know how many times you've said it back?" Kat asked again, waiting for Jeongguk's reply.

"Kat.. Baby," Jeongguk said quickly, when Kat turn her back and facing the blue waves of the ocean. "Baby, when I didn't say I love you, my love towards won't go any lesser.  Also, I've been busy studying for the final exams. If I failed both the practical and theory, I won't be accepted by the Firefighting Academy."

"I do understand..." Kat turned around suddenly, on the verge of crying, "Then... please tell me I'm not the only one who's in love?"

"Kat.. You gotta know me well enough by now that sometimes actions don't speak louder than words." Jeongguk voice was so soft.

"Are you saying I don't know you well enough?" Kat let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "Obviously this relationship doesn't mean as much to you as it does to me, then."

Jeongguk's furrowed his eyebrows. Kat's face was not drawn with sadness, or open with hope, or anything. "I don't know if you realize this, Kat, but you do know how much I wanted to be a firefighter. Let's not argue about little things please, baby? Let me focus fully on my training. It's obviously this is not something that matters much to you, but it does to me."

Kat stood stock still. She feels as if a bucket of freezing water dumped over her. Something clenched tightly in her chest. She thought their wedding which is months away are not important to him. "If that is how you feel.. Jeongguk, I won't stand in your way. Focus on your career and I will go back to America immediately."

And as she turn to walked away, Jeongguk couldn't help but grab her arms and pulled her onto his chest and hug her tightly.

"Do you have to do this?" Jeongguk swallows, closes his eyes. "Why? Why??.."  Tears running down his cheeks, pleading for an answer.

"Y- yes I have to." Pulling out from the hug. Kat gently hold Jeongguk's hand. "I've decided to continue my Degree. Dad already brought the tickets and I'm leaving tonight." Kat smiled softly.

"Sorry about not telling you earlier but.. you wasn't eager to know either." Kat tried to be reassuring, but couldn't keep that little bit of jaded anger out of her voice.

Jeongguk huffs and caress her flowy perm hair out of her face due to the windy weather. "Then how about our engagement? and how long till you be back?"

Her stomach twists and ties itself into a mess of knots as she takes in the handsome features of Jeongguk. She thought this man belongs to her, but when it comes to this, she has to let go.

Maybe her insecurities are too big an obstacle to overcome, or maybe they're just not right for each other. Her heart aches at that thought because in spite of everything, she really loves him. She has to try.

She took Jeongguk's face in her hands running her thumbs over the stubble of his cheeks. Their lips clashed and his hands moved to settle down down to her hips, entrapping her in his arms. "Don't wait for me. I don't know if I'll come back, but I will still wore this ring as a reminder of us.."

The next day, Kat was gone to America.

He hadn't waited for Kat to return; part of him wished he would and part of him said it was better if he didn't and part of him knew that even if Kat did return it was highly unlikely she'd want anything to do with him anyway.

Of course, Jeongguk would never forget Kat's sweet face. It had haunted his dreams for a while after that. The way their hands fell apart from the hugs and watching the polite smile on her beautiful face drop away into an expression of disappointed disdain when she left...

Eventually he has forget about Katie Leung. But he still slides the purple ring onto his finger everytime before leaving the house.

Habits? And Taehyung? Is he really in love with that paramedic or he takes him as a rebound due to his emotional instability and desire to distract himself from a painful break up?
