Taehyung had been at home eversince the suspension, but that morning, his senior officer called and asked if he could assist with standby in a warehouse fire. He had been informed it was one of the worst blaze seen in years and they needed to prepare, in any case if firefighters suffering from exhaustion or smoke inhalation. He didn't want to work anymore that day, but he knew it beat sitting at home and gets lost in memories of the past. Immediately he change to his uniform and left his apartment.
When he arrived at the scene, he jogged over to his unit and crew, on standby. He had been told the teams of firefighters were already inside, but at this point it was a waiting game as they're listening to the communications between the commanders and the firefighters inside the building.
One conversation from the team leader indicates there was an injury and requested an alternate to take the wounded out before replacing the member, but then they heard a petrified shout over the radio, chills ran up his spine.
"Backdraft! We've got backdraft and flashover!"
"Joshua!" the chief barked into the radio, "Joshua, what's your status?"Silence.
"Joshua? Send status, over."
Silence.
"Daniel, Ji Hoon, Yugyeom and Woo Jin! I need you guys to go in and retrieve them," he said, waving them over. "They're in sector three. Last report they were entering the conference room. Go, go!"
Taehyung walked over to the chief and waited for him to finish speaking to the other commanders. When the chief finished his conversation and turned to looked at him, Taehyung bowed to him and gathered his thoughts.
"Sir, who's on the team that encountered the backdraft?" he asked, knowing the phenomenon was especially deadly.
"Eunwoo, Joshua and Jeongguk."
🚒
Taehyung's heart skipped a beat and a cold sweat broke out over him. He replayed the parts where just a few days ago, its the last night he spent time with Jeongguk. He had regretted the way he had acted, but he had been battling the confusion of what that tough firefighter meant to him.
Then he had decided to wrote a letter to Jeongguk that he's terribly sorry; but the cold of reality hit him hard. What if Jeongguk never had a chance to read the letter?
The chief was giving him a strange look. Then the radio chose that moment to crackled as the rescue team checked in. "Sir, Daniel here. Joshua's gone, Sir."
"What are Eunwoo's and Jeongguk's conditions?" the chief asked, Taehyung on the edge of breaking as he awaited the response.
".....Eunwoo gone as well, Sir. We need another squad to help remove the bodies." Daniel stated. "Approaching Jeongguk now. Over."
