Kindergarten was hard. Even Panda knew that. No, especially she knew that. She always messed up her addition, and to make matters worse, all her classmates laughed at her. Well, almost all the kids.
She had one friend. Panda and her just kinda fit, you know? They liked to give each other nicknames. Panda liked to call her Turtle, because she always wanted to see those at the pet store. Turtle called Panda...Well, Panda. Pandas were her favorite! They looked so soft, and cute, and fluffy, and she just wanted to-
"Andie?" A voice jolted Panda out of her reverie.
She jerked her head up, a frightened look clear on her face. "Y-yes, Mr. Erwin?"
"I asked you a question." His voice was soft, but firm. It made Panda want to cry.
"Can you repeat that, s-sir?" Her little shoulders shook.
"Yes, I will. I asked you: what's nine plus ten?"
Addition. The queston sucked up all the oxygen in Panda's throat, and she gulped. The little girl glanced around the room in a panic. All eyes were on her.
One boy with a golden bowl cut smiled warmly at her. Armin. That was his name.
Turtle furiously mouthed some words at her. Panda squinted, but she couldn't make out the words. Turtle sighed and held up two pointer fingers next to each other. She mouthed some words again. Panda furrowed her eyebrows, confused, and Turtle smacked her forehead.
"Andie? Do you know?" Mr. Erwin inquired gently.
"Tw-twenty-one?" Panda stuttered.
The class erupted in laughter. Two boys, one with a mop of brown hair and the other with a stern look and a black undercut, watched her worriedly. They sat next to each other, and the one with brown hair grasped Stern Look's hand tightly.
"No," Panda's kindergarten teacher sighed over the roar. "No, it's eleven."
Tears welled in Panda's eyes and the deafening sound in ears only seemed to increase. She stood up and ran from the room. Her vision blurred and all the different colors swirled. She wiped at her eyes and hid in the bathroom. A knock tapped lightly at the door.
Three people entered; Turtle, smiling sadly, who sat down next to Panda and feverishly grabbed her hand, and Stern Look and the brown haired boy. They both held hands, and they sat down, together, across from Panda and her best friend.
She sniffed. "Boys aren't allowed," Panda whined quietly.
The brown haired one ignored that comment and said, "We're bullied, too."
Turtle used her pointer finger to trace words into Panda's palms. They'd only been doing it for about a year, but it was something the two were skilled at. Eren and Levi, she wrote. Eren talking.
"I like Levi," Eren continued, "and he likes me, too. We get teased."
"You do?" Panda asked.
"Yeah," Levi murmured. "Don't be sad. We'll be friends, and then the meanies won't hurt."
Panda sniffled again. "Okay," she whispered.
