Day Twenty-Five- Why Am I Not Dead?

(2015 Edit: wtf is wrong with past me)

Levi shuddered, blood dripping off his fingertips. A hiss escaped through his teeth. Petra kneeled at his feet. Her eyes were already glossed over. Blood pumped from her jugular vein, and her hands fell limply from covering her torn throat to the forest floor. A shiver ran through Levi. It wasn't supposed to end like this.

A few feet away, Jean stared blankly up at Levi, a stake through his left eye. He wasn't bleeding anymore. Levi stumbled forward, tripping over Marco's arm. It was completely severed from the young boy.

Insanity ran around his mind like a...Well, a madman. All because I didn't want Mikasa to die. His sister was young, too young, for this game of death or death.

Levi wiped a hand across his forehead, smearing away the sweet blood and sweat of his friends and colleagues. A hysteric sob tore through him. What do I get out of this?

Why am I not dead?

I should be dead.

He stepped over countless bodies; Hanji's, her thick-rimmed glasses broken and stepped on; Pixis, his bald head smashed in when Levi had repeatedly stomped on it for hours; poor, innocent Armin, his body skewered open in a straight line from his chin to his belly button like a pike, innards spilling into the muddy grass; Connie, his limbs in thin shreds from being attacked by Levi's childhood- and now dead- friend, Isabel; Ymir and Krista, hardly recognizable, they were so mangled.

The list went on and on. Erwin was a few feet back, impaled on a tree branch. Levi licked his salty lips. I'm too skilled for this, too mad for them. They didn't even see me coming.

He neared a body. His neck was twisted at an odd angle, mouth open in a wordless scream. He was not Levi's victim; he would have remembered.

All the pressure of killing almost twenty people took a toll on Levi.

He broke, screaming, "He was mine! He was-"

His voice broke, and Levi fell to his knees in the red mud. The broken man's tears washed away some of Petra's blood. He wiped back the other man's hair, crusted over with blood and unnameable fluids.

"He was mine to kill."

Levi sobbed uncontrollably as he watched the staring blue-green eyes of Eren Yëager.
