My twin sister, Amelia and I are very alike in some ways and incredibly diverse in others. She liked parties and I liked to study; she dyed her hair blue while I kept mine the nice light blonde I was born with; she even went to a public school while I liked staying at home and being taught by our mom. We got along, we just liked different things.
I was happy with who I was and how my life was going. I liked staying home most of the time and I liked spending my nights with books. It wasn't that I didn't have friends or a social life, I did talk to a few kids that I used to be friends with when I did go to school, as well as a handful of kids in town and whatnot, but I did stay inside a lot since they all still went to a real school and had other friends that they saw everyday. So I was kind of upset and shocked when my mom announced she had gotten a job.
"As what?" Amy asked at the dinner table that night, her mouth full of mashed potatoes that she almost spit across the table.
"A receptionist." she replied proudly. "And don't talk with your mouth full, it's rude."
"So what am I supposed to do?" I asked worriedly, making sure to swallow my food before talking so I wouldn't get scolded too.
"Go to school with your sister, of course." she said as if it was obvious.
To me, it wasn't. I was so used to just being in a class by myself that the thought of actually going back to school seemed completely impossible and out of the question.
Apparently, Amy was surprised by it too. She coughed, almost spitting up food for the second time, and gave our parents a wide-eyed look of horror. "What?! N-no, you can't send her to my school!"
"Why not?" our dad asked with a shrug. "I'm sure your friends will like her."
"I'm sure they won't." she scoffed. "Guys, you don't understand-"
"The decision is final, Amelia." mom stated. "The paperwork was already sent in and she'll start tomorrow."
The rest of dinner was spent in silence.
-
Amy burst into my room as I was gathering up my belongings into my old backpack. She looked unhappy and stressed out and I didn't understand why. She wasn't the one being thrown back into public school.
"We have a problem." she said, slamming the door shut behind her before sitting on my desk.
I looked up at her from where I sat in the desk chair. "We? I think it's more like me."
"Alice, the things I've told my friends about you are very different than how you really are," she told me. "and when they realize that, they'll think you're an even bigger loser than you come across as."
I knew she didn't actually think I was a loser. In fact, my sister and I had the same grades. Amy liked books and quiet things too, she just low-key liked them.
I just stared at her blankly. "You told them lies about me? Thanks, Ame, I'm glad you're proud of me."
"Alice, you're boring! I just wanted them to think I had a cool sister and that I didn't live with some recluse who never does anything! I was helping you!"
"Well it's not much help if they're going to find out I really am 'some recluse'."
"No, because you'll go along with it and I'll help you really be like the teenage girl you should be." she grinned.
"You mean you?" I asked, cocking an eyebrow.
She shrugged. "Not totally."
I sighed loudly and dropped my stuff. I knew that even though she said "not really", that was exactly the case. I would have to be a blonde version of her to impress her stupid friends that I knew I wouldn't even like. Especially if they were anything like her.
"Don't be mad, Al!" she begged. "It won't be bad. I'll pick out something for you to wear tomorrow and I'll show you around and introduce you and it'll be fine, I swear."
"Exactly how many people do I have to lie to?" I asked, closing my eyes and pinching the bridge of my nose.
"Just like, four of my friends and my boyfriend."
"You lied to your boyfriend?"
She shrugged. "I lied about my sister, he lied about his dick size - we're even."
I looked up at her and chuckled. "Too small?"
She widened her eyes and shook her head. "Too big, man. Too big."
I nodded. "Keep him."
"Oh, definitely."
