in a forest of pines.
They all scream, "Up! Up!"
I close my eyes and hunker down.
I spread myself out.
They seem spears shooting from the earth,
reaching for dreams
the height of stars.
I reach over,
seeking earthly things.
I set myself deep
where I stand.
When the gales gust,
they tremble
and shatter down the cliffs.
They've forgotten their roots.
But I have placed myself well.
And when the ocean winds reveal
what used to be pine forest,
I will find that I'm not alone.
