Chapter 18: Strings

"Weather's unbelievably cold tonight," Ezekiel said with a shiver. He flourished his hands over each of his arms, causing black smoke to creep all over his body that formed into his trademark black cloak.

"Seriously, when are you going to ditch that scary cloak of yours?" Professor Evanesca snapped at her brother. "The way it flutters even in the absence of wind just gives me the creeps. You should probably try switching colors."

The young Evanesca just rolled his eyes. "Duh, it's imbued with dark magic. Of course it will look creepy and scary. Are you expecting rainbows and flowers to come out of this cloak? Also, at least no one would suspect that I secretly support a different school," Ezekiel said, glancing at the blue robes of Professor Elena.

The lady in blue narrowed her eyes. "Do you have a problem with my attire, brother?" she asked.

It's just the start of the year that's why the weather's still chilly. The Evanesca siblings are currently taking a casual stroll around the school campus. Curfew hours had just begun, and the only people in the school grounds apart from the three are the Emerald Guards and agents patrolling the school. A deep silence had fallen over Emerald; silence so deep that neither the crickets nor the distant noise of the vehicles were able to penetrate.

Ezekiel gazed up at the green barrier enclosing the entire school. "Ike and RB are getting stronger day by day. RB in particular. He doesn't have the doubt and uncertainty that might hinder his perseverance and determination to become stronger. I'm pretty sure that it's only a matter of time before he finally unlocks the full power of his weirdness."

"As teachers, we can only guide these children as they discover the limits of their respective powers. We should be happy for their achievements and guide them towards the correct path. Of all our students here in Emerald, RB is the one who needs our guidance the most," the headmistress said.

Ezekiel's cosmic eyes rested on his sister. "Are you going to allow them to get stronger? You do know of course what could happen if they unlock the full power of their respective weirdnesses? History has shown us that their weirdnesses were destined to clash and oppose each other. Their history keeps repeating itself, and Ike and RB are about to become the next victims of the age-old conflict between the powers of Life and Death."

The lady in green raised an eyebrow. "And what are you suggesting me to do? Hinder their progress? That is one of the cruelest things that I could do to them, and that would be a great insult to a teacher like me. If they want to move forward, we should urge them to keep running. If they want to fly, we should help them refine their wings. Like what I said, it is our sworn duty to help these children achieve their dreams."

"However, we must also exercise extreme caution when training them. Ike and Rubio need to be guided towards the right path so they don't go off course. Power is intoxicating. Young ones are especially vulnerable to the glory of immense power. It's just like drinking a glass of cold, refreshing water when you're really, really thirsty. If you take even a tiny sip of the water, it will make you even thirstier. We must guide those two so they don't drown themselves in their quest for strength and power."

"But Ike and RB. . ."

"Are destined to fight?" Professor Evanesca asked. "History has shown us that it's next to impossible to force the powers of both Life and Death to work as one. However, bear in mind that history is and will always be a work in progress. History is being continuously written. Ike and RB do not strike me as people who would allow fate to dictate their lives. They are going to finish what Elijah and Astrid have started. They are going to end the age-old conflict of the two Cores. They are going to write their own future, their own destiny."
