I remember first seeing the trailer to this film when I was a kid. That was my first introduction to the killer doll. Now that I'm all grown up, I can say that Chucky is one of my favorite slasher villains next to Freddy Krueger and Candyman. Anyway, a little history for this film. Seed of Chucky is the fifth installment in the Child's Play franchise. Released on November 12th 2004, the film was written and directed by Don Mancini in his directorial debut. Don Mancini is basically the creator of Chucky. Mancini has written most of the Child's Play movies since the first one was released in 1988. He and producer David Kirschner (who also produced The Pagemaster and An American Tail) have worked on every single Child's Play project together. So they've remained loyal to the character. Unfortunately, Seed of Chucky didn't do so well critically, earning a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. On a 12 million dollar budget, the film grossed 24 million dollars at the box office. And Seed of Chucky would be the last Child's Play film to be theatrically released until the 2019 remake. It's honestly a real shame because the next two sequels, Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky are actually a nice return to form for the franchise. While Seed is a black comedy, Don Mancini really brought Curse and Cult back to its horror movie roots, and those two latter films deserved a theatrical release. Anyway, what do I like about Seed of Chucky? Well Brad Dourif (the man who has been voicing Chucky since the first film) and Jennifer Tilly do a great job voicing their respective characters. They definitely sound like they're having fun. And the film does a decent job at its commentary on gender identity. Plus it's pretty fun seeing Jennifer Tilly play an exaggerated version of herself, and you can tell that she's reveling in it. The jokes are okay, and the puppetry used to bring the characters to life is well done. I'll always give a film credit for using practical effects. Plus, it may honestly have one of my favorite Chucky deaths in the film series.
Man that is over-the-top and gory. And I love it! Seed of Chucky is definitely a guilty pleasure movie for me. But it's a lot better than Red Hood Rises.
