The sun was giving light to a small apartment. You did not recognize this one. Not from New York, nor Japan. It looked like it wasn't from your own time either. More like, the 70s. You could tell by the old-looking TV on the stand. It was in front of a brown couch that had blankets neatly placed on cushioning. There was a table to the side, with a lamp.
'I swear to god, if I time traveled again,' you thought. Sure, the watch wasn't working, but it wasn't impossible. You walked around the small apartment. There was a small hall that led to a bedroom, and a bathroom, that was across from it. You turned around to see a kitchen across from the couch and TV. The linoleum floor felt cold under your bare feet. Your eyes felt itchy from all the crying you had done during the day. For a moment, you had forgotten about that experience.
You walked up to a counter that had a bottle of champagne, and two glasses. A small cake was next to them; its candles weren't lit. There was also a medium sized box. It was white, with a purple ribbon to secure it.
"Okay, we're here," you heard someone say. "Open your eyes."
You saw two women standing in front of the counter. One of them was a tall blonde. The other had the same hair color as you, and significantly shorter. She was the one with her eyes covered.
When the woman took her hands off, you saw her eyes. They were just like your grandmother's. You then realized that the other woman was your Aunt Barbra. She was your grandmother's roommate, and the clingiest woman you've ever met. All of a sudden, tears overflowed your eyes. Not ones of fear. But of happiness. You wanted to give both women a hug. You wanted Barbra to spin you around like she would when you visited. But now, both women were dead. This was just a forgotten memory.
"Happy birthday Yukina," Barbra said.
Your grandmother turned around to her roommate, then at the surprise. She looked so overwhelmingly happy. It was like she had never experienced something like that before. Before she could say anything. Yukina was handed the white box from earlier. It looked to have some sort of clothing in it.
"What is this?" she asked.
"Well," Barbra began. "You remembered when I took your measurements right?"
Yukina nodded.
"I know that you came from Japan, and that it was a long long time ago," Barbra continued. "So, I wanted to make something that made you think of home."
Yukina untied the ribbon, and opened the box. Inside, was a navy blue kimono. It had the pattern of white crescents on it. The obi was a dark purple; the color went well with the kimono design. Your grandmother pulled it out to see the dress in its glory. You had forgotten that Barb was a sewing wizard. She had fixed your special dress for Midsummer celebrations a whole bunch of times.
Barbra waited with her hands wrapped around each other. "Do you like it?" she asked.
Your grandmother turned to her with tears in her eyes. They were streaming down her cheeks like a natural river. She hugged your aunt, burying her head into her shoulder. Giving Barbra the impression that she loved it. You stepped closer to both women, and leaned into them. However, you did not feel their warmth. You hadn't for the past few years. Since both had died a long time ago. You wish you had a physical presence, just so you could feel that again. It almost made you feel like a whining five year-old again.
"Brother would've loved you," Yukina said while looking up at Barbra.
The tall woman rubbed her cheek against the top of your grandmother's head. "Aw, I only care about what you think you dork," she said. "But that's nice to know."
