Over the course of the Final Selection, you and Tanjirou stayed together. It was mostly you that insisted because of strength in numbers. Plus, there would be an alibi if one of you ended up as a dead body. There was also the fact that you hit it off pretty quickly. You found Tanjiou's sense of smell to be interesting. It kind of reminded you of a bloodhound. You told him about the future, mostly modern medicine and film production. He was pretty amazed when you told him about animation. The glow in his eyes was brighter than the moonlight you see every night. It was then when you concluded that he was the nicest person you'd met.
"What's this?" Tanjirou asked. He was studying the cochlear implant closely. Your eyes widened when you saw him with it. From what you could see, it wasn't broken. Still, you didn't want him messing with it.
"Be careful with that!" you snapped. "It's really important to me." You averted your gaze from the redhead. Charlie's death was something you've avoided for awhile now. Even Tsuki wouldn't mention things about your twin. All you could remember were the first lonely nights without her there. She would at least watch the moon with you until she fell asleep on your shoulder. "It was my twin sister's," you said. "She gave it to me when she died."
Tanjirou could instantly smell your sadness. It was a weird thing that he could do with his sense of smell. Neither of you really understood it. Still, the mix of the emotion and your natural scent of rosewater filled his nose. He wondered how the device worked though. Maybe you knew.
You felt the cochlear implant get placed into your hand. The redhead's hand was soft with patches of roughness every once in awhile. You looked at him. There was a sad smile on his face. For some reason, it was comforting. "You don't have to talk about it if it's too hard," he said. "I know what it's like to lose family."
A wave of guilt washed over you. The redhead's family was gone too. What happened? A demon? Maybe. There was also the gash of blood on his forehead. You knew that you couldn't heal it. There would be too much risk in him knowing too much. 'Just when I want to heal someone, I can't,' you thought. You looked up at Tanjirou. "Thanks," you said, keeping an emotional distance. You still had a home to get to after all.
After going through hell and back, you end up where you started. This time, the sun was rising over the horizon. It started to illuminate the gate, the shining twins, and the other survivors. There wasn't very many compared to the people that started out. You could count five right here when there were at least twenty about a week ago.
One of the survivors was a boy with yellow hair. He seemed to be having a panic attack and unable to talk to anyone. "I'm going to die," he muttered. There was dirt all over his face and clothes. Well of course he would, the boy just went through seven days of complete and utter hell. The fact that he lived amazed you.
"Might not wanna talk like that," you leaned over to the boy.
He jumped away from you all defensive. It kinda made you regret your choices. There was also the fact you were the most awkward person on the planet. 'Oh god what'd I get into,' you thought. The boy realized that you weren't going to hurt him, and relaxed himself. "How would you know?" he asked. "I only survived by luck."
"That might be true, but you survived. That counts. You even trained for this moment," you said. The boy's expression wasn't changing on the level of fear. You quickly tried to think of something to say. Maybe you could make sure you and this boy would survive. "What's your name?" you asked.
"Zenitsu Agatsuma," the boy said.
"Well Zenitsu I'll tell you what," you said. "I'll promise that I'll survive, if you do the same." You didn't really know what you were saying. There was no way you could tell if you'd see this boy again. Still, there was this feeling you would. You held up your pinky to him. Reluctantly, the yellow haired boy locked his pinky with your own.
