icarus
when you spread your wings
i hope you remember
the cruelty of the sun
do not mistake
its burning yellow
for compassion
it is seething angry
and it will eat you raw
for it is not kind
it has no reason to be
icarus
when you spread your wings
i hope you remember
the merciless
hands of the sea
do not mistake
its calm front
for forgiveness
unsparing, ruthless
it will swallow you whole
for it is not kind
it has no reason to be
icarus
when you spread
your wings
remember
you are
not a god
the sun will not
become small for you
the sea will not
become home for you
my son,
follow the path of trail
it will guide you home
icarus
my boy,
tell me
was it the
taste of freedom
clinging on
to your tongue
like melted sweets
or was it
insanity that
drove you
far far far away
was it rage
bottled, hidden
or was it the human in you
that always wished to
f l y
icarus
was it the failure
of my invention
or was it merely
an old man's mistake
i told you
you were not god
had i told you
you can not
afford to be human
perhaps, then
i would not be
writing letters
to my dead son
but worry not
i am satisfied
i am at peace
with the thought
that even in his
last moment
even in his
dying breaths
my son was
f l y i n g
