"what is depression?"
seven year old me
asked my mother

i had heard my elder sister
say that word a lot
out of mere curiosity, i wanted
to know what it meant

my mother shook her head
"nothing too big of a deal"
was her reply

seven years later
i asked my mother
the same question

this time, she hesitated a bit
but her response was the same
the only difference was the
absence of my sister.

for anyone who didn't understand, the sister ends up killing herself because of depression, the mother never took it seriously and thought it to be a phase her daughter was going through. depression and anxiety isn't something to be treated lightly. please, if you have depression or are going through a difficult time, talk to someone about it. if you know someone who has it, help them! don't belittle them or make them feel inferior.

to make it a little less sad, here's a continuation of it but thirty years later, enjoy :)

thirty years later
i am asked the same
question by my daughter

should i
shake my head
and assure her that is was
not that big of a deal
just like my mother had
thirty years ago?

but i am not my mother
and will certainly not
repeat the same
mistakes as her

as i am explaining it to her
she bursts in to tears
what have i done now
i think to myself

my daughter lifts her sleeves
and shows me her scars
"mama, i thought you would
never understand"

i pull her in to my arms
little does she know
tears are falling down
my cheeks as well

i bury my head in to hers
we are both crying
and comforting each other

and then she says those words
six words that made me
glad i didn't give up
"mama, i'm so proud of you"
