my dear father,

remember when you asked me
what i wanted to be when i grew up
i always replied with doctor
and that smile you gave me
made lying all the more easier
because it made you happy

but father,
i never really wanted to be a doctor
i changed my mind years ago

i want to be a poet

i know you want me to cure people
but father,
i can heal them better with my poetry

i want them to drown in my words
rather than prescribed medicines
sometimes, you heal better with words
sometimes, comfort is found in
letters and sentences
not in spoonfuls of liquid

i have never asked for anything
this is the one thing i want
please give me a chance
i'll make you more proud
than any doctor could

he refused
he told me i was stupid
he took my ink away
and then he stopped talking to me

so i wrote poetry about him.

- when i finally had the guts to tell my father about my dream, he called it a stupid phase, said it was a distraction from my studies, discouraged me, shut me out, so i wrote poetry about him hoping he might understand the beauty.

and he did.

the whole point is to not let anyone stop you from accomplishing your dreams, even if it's your own dad. the constant pressure to be someone you're not, to live a life of an engineer when you were born to be a poet.

qotd: what are some insane dreams you have?

aotd: have a published book, win a watty award, reach 1 million reads and meet rupi kaur :")
