After we packed Ashlyn met back up with her mom, dad, and Joshua. I was waiting on the front porch of the packhouse again. Somehow, no matter what happened I always ended up right back here.
I heard footsteps from behind me and looked up to see Sander. He looked down at me and raised an eyebrow at me.
"What's that look for?" I asked him and he looked surprised that I did.
"Sorry?" He said back to me.
"I asked why you are looking at me like that." I stood up and walked over to him with my arms crossed. Although Sander was tall and towered over me, he seemed legitimately confused at this moment.
"I did not expect you to be here." He told me as he looked down at me.
"Well I'm here to see Ashlyn, she's my best friend." I gave Sander a once over and looked up to him and raised one of my eyebrows.
"Ashlyn is your best friend?" I nodded and tightened my arms to my chest. We stood there in awkward silence until our attention was taken away from us when we saw Ashlyn come out of the house.
"Sander!" She shouted as she ran over to him and gave him a huge hug. Once Sander was holding Ashlyn his whole expression of confusion and worrying melted away and was replaced by... love?
"So you got to me Clover again? I heard she showed you around before I got the chance to meet you." Even Ashlyn's face lit up as she looked over Sander's face.
"Yes, she did, she was very helpful." Ashlyn smiled and sunk deeper into Sander's embrace.
I stood there awkwardly as they both looked into each other's eyes and ignored the world around them. Even when my mom and dad walked out of the packhouse as well as Ashlyn's whole family. It wasn't until Ashlyn's father cleared his throat that they both broke eye contact.
"Ah hey, dad." Ashlyn walked away from Sander causing him to clench his fists as if he no longer knew what to do with his hands with her, not in them.
The whole encounter took no more than twenty minutes. I stood with my mom and dad as I watched Ashlyn break down in tears over and over again as she hugged each and every one of us. Even Joshua began breaking down in tears. Ashlyn's suitcase was already loaded into Sander's vehicle and the next thing I knew she was standing at the door ready to open it.
"Ash! Wait!" I yelled as I ran down the porch steps and into her arms that were already open and waiting for me to come to her.
"I'll miss you so much! You call me as soon as you get there. Okay?" I bawled out to her.
"Of course I'll call you every day I promise!!" I finally let Ashlyn go and opened the door for her. She climbed in and I stepped away. Sander started the vehicle and they both drove off down the long drive.
I didn't know what to do now, I didn't want to go back to my room and I didn't want to go help make breakfast either. Even though I was an Alpha my mom taught me from a young age about all the responsibilities that each member of a pack contributed to. From Omegas cleaning and maintaining the packhouse to the Beta, the worked at communication between the Alpha and the other members. Even though I didn't need to do these jobs I overall had a great time and even Ashlyn saw that because the day after I started helping out in the kitchen she joined me. Even though she had to wake up two hours earlier than she needed to.
Now I didn't care if making breakfast was a lesson or not I didn't want to do it right now, not when Ash wouldn't be there.
I began marching off from the house and around the corner, as I walked further away from my mom calling, and my dad and my dad telling her to give me a little space. I realized I was close to the forest now. Then an idea popped into my head.
I could try shifting again, it was about 5 am or so, so everyone who came to the feast would have already retired to their cabins or rooms, and all the Omegas would be cleaning up last night's feast by the fire. That meant that no one would be in the woods right now. I began to run directly into the trees going deeper and deeper. I needed to get as far into the woods as I could, if there was someone else away I doubt they would run all the way to the border of a pack they weren't familiar with and this early in the morning the border patrol was bound to be making shift changes. I could have the woods to myself if I played this right.
