You're Finally Back

You woke up early today and looked at your calendar. You let out a hopeful breath with a bright smile. Today would be your third time going to the airport to see if your beautiful boyfriend would finally be returning from the recent war.
So far you stopped receiving any letters from him, saying if he was alright, if he was happy, if he missed you or not. And it was killing you. He usually sent at least one a week. But then they dwindled down to one every 3 weeks...then down to one every other month, until they just altogether stopped arriving. You felt sick to your stomach when you thought about it, but you knew your boyfriend was a hard headed and persistent man. That's what made you fall in love with him.
'Nothing would keep him down!' He would always say loudly before he was shipped off.
'Nothing will stop me from winning and coming back home safely to you.' He would promise constantly in his letters.
It had been 4 years since you had been at that airport for the first time to see him off. It pained you deeply to have to let him go...he was everything to you. You loved him so very much, every cell in your body craved that man.
You had been back to the same exact airport when you heard that the soldiers were returning, hoping you would see those beautiful bright blue eyes searching for you in the crowd.
You would stand there waiting for him for hours, seeing multiple families reuniting with their sons, fathers reuniting with their daughters, and even husbands reuniting with their wives...You felt so much joy for those people, that they actually had the person they loved most in this world back...yet the envy of not being able to see the one you loved overwhelmed you. You would stand there until there was no one left in airport, waiting, praying that he would have just taken a long time to find his way around...but inside you knew. Your brain knew he wasn't coming back, but your heart wouldn't accept it. Your body refused to move from that spot with your sign that said 'Welcome Home My Hero!' in big letters with red hearts surrounding the words, waiting until you saw him. Security had to force you out many times, telling you repeatedly that there were no more soldiers getting off. You pleaded with them multiple times to let you check, you had to make sure he wasn't there. You needed to know for sure he wasn't going to show up late and you not be there.
"Ma'am! If there were any more soldiers getting off we would know! Now please leave!" They would say firmly and lock you out, leaving you outside...alone...heartbroken.
All you wanted was you boyfriend back. To hold him close to you, to know he was alright, to let him know how much you loved him...that was all you needed.
You felt so alone that it hurt. You're world felt dimmed and hallow without your tall, beautiful, blonde love. His thick accent made you smile, his blue eyes mesmerized you, his smile made you melt, and his touch set off an explosion of butterflies in your stomach every time. He had his flaws, like his cocky attitude, his sarcastic remarks, his irrational thinking, his hard head, and his narrow mindedness. But he also had his optimism, his jokes, his romance, his hard work, and his deeply caring heart. That was who he was and you missed every single part of him.
You're second time going to airport, you saw a tall blonde male make his way out of the security gate and your heart stopped, it was him. You knew it for sure! Tears brimmed your eyes and your body was shaking with anticipation to hug him. You reached down and grabbed you home made sign and waved it frantically over the crowd along with a few other people's signs. You couldn't wait to feel his arms around you once again, to feel safe and happy in your heart once again. It was more than you could take as tears steamed down your face happily. After a few minutes of standing there, you noticed he hadn't made his way over to you. You looked over the crowd trying to find your boyfriend and saw he was with another woman and their...daughter. You could feel your heart shatter when the blonde man turned around and tears filled his BROWN eyes.
It wasn't him...
With your broken heart and tear stained face, you walked home alone again, for the second time.
It took all the strength you had to try and be optimistic this time around. You tried not to think of the worst possible thing, like that he may never come back because he wasn't even...
"Stop!" You screamed at yourself angrily as you got dressed in your jeans and a shirt that you bought that said, 'My Man's A Soldier.' With his last name printed on the back like a jersey.
You brushed you (h/l) (h/c) hair and put waterproof makeup on then headed out again...for the third time.
As you arrived at the airport you stopped at the front gates and closed your eyes, gripping tightly to your sign, "Please God let him be here this time...I don't think I can make it home alone again..." You whispered to yourself then headed inside.
Fighting the crowd to get closer you waited as you saw multiple men and women waiting for their returning soldiers. Your heart rate slowed and your stomach felt sick as you stood there watching all the reuniting couples, again envying their happiness. That's all you wanted...was it that hard to ask for?
Tears brimming you eyes again, you intently looked at the security gate, pleading for the man you loved to walk through it.
Person after person after person left you with less optimism than before. He wasn't showing up and all the airport crowd was dwindling once again. You tried to keep a smile on your face just in case he did show up. You didn't want his first look at you in years to be a frown.
There were only a handful of people but were quickly rejoined with the soldier they had waited for and left you there waiting. Alone. Again.
Standing there for a bit longer, your heart grew heavy as the smile on your face dissipated slowly.
He wasn't coming home...not today...not ever.
After about 45 minutes of standing alone in the airport, your (e/c) eyes still glued to the security entrance, you finally understood that it was time you had given up and return home. You clutched your sign against your chest and sobbed quietly as you started walking away from the entrance.
"I just wanted him back home..." You wept to yourself, tears staining the old sign.
Your heart started to shatter to the point of hopelessness until you heard an exasperated voice.
"(Y/N)...?" A think German accent called your name.
You froze instantly. Your eyes widened at the sound of his voice. You couldn't turn around, you were to scared to be disappointed again.
Then the voice spoke again, "(Y/N)!" The deep voice erupting with joy as your name spilled off his lips in a quivering tone.
Finally you forced yourself to turnaround.
As you did, the sight of a tall, beautiful, blue eyed, blonde German overwhelmed you and all you could do was drop you sign, "Ludwig..." You breathed in utter shock. You didn't believe it was true until you saw him throw off his bags and run to you, tears flooding his face. You followed suit and ran as fast as you could to the love of your life.
As you got closer you jumped up and wrapped yourself around him. Your arms were tight around his neck and your legs tight around his waist. You cried hysterically into his shoulder as you gripped him tighter feeling as if you couldn't get close enough to him.
Ludwig wrapped his arms tightly around your waist and supported your weight as he laughed happily with tears still streaming down his own face. "I can't believe that you actually waited for me for this long." His thick German accent sounding so sweet to you ears.
"I told you I'd wait forever if I had to." You tried to say through you hysterical tears.
Your beautiful boyfriend was holding you again, you couldnt stop crying at the amazing feeling of being held by him. You breath in and giggled when he smelled just like you remembered. You leaned back to look at his face, and he held you steady. You touched his cheeks gently, wiping tears as you did, then ran your hands through his beautiful slicked back blonde hair. "Oh my Lord how I missed you. You're even more beautiful than I remembered. Oh how I love you so much." His voice was shaking from the excitement he felt on the inside.
You smiled happily to finally hear those words after so long of reading them on paper. "My love, you can't even begin to comprehend how much I missed you. I adore you Ludwig." You cried softly and hugged him tightly again, "Please don't ever leave me again!" You begged as you snuggled you head into his shoulder.
He chuckled lightly and made you look at him, "I promise. Now please, kiss me before I go insane." He pleaded with that warm loving smile you had missed far too much.
You wasted no time with an answer and quickly leaned into his lips to share a deep lovingly passionate kiss with the man you had spent far to long away from.
