Heiryung sat in Mrs. Yang's office. An officer was sitting on the side as well, a tape recorder and the lawyer's pen and paper ready to go.

She had allowed Johnny to sit in with her as he was considered legally, her guardian.

"Are you ready Ms. Lee," Mrs. Yang asked as she glanced at the younger girl.

Heiryung nodded as she clenched her fist.

"Ok start at whatever point you want to," she said.

Heiryung glanced at Johnny, his reassuring gaze telling her it was ok.

"It started when my dad got laid off when I was around four years old," she finally sighed. "I don't remember much at all actually. I just remembered my mom and him always argued after that. He was rude and irritable. I think he definitely suffered or suffers from some sort of mental illness."

Mrs. Yang nodded as she scribbled down notes.

"My mom, she well," Heiryung paused.

What could she say about her mom?

That she had left her youngest child behind while she chose her son to save? How she didn't even leave a note or an apology, a trace of the family? How she left a bitter taste in a child's mouth for adults. How she made Heiryung believe that nothing was truly meant to last, giving her trust and commitment issues?

"She left me behind and took my older brother," she muttered. "She didn't leave anything behind, just me and my dad. I remember seeing my dad's truck in the driveway but not hers and asking where my brother was. That was the first time he lashed out at me."

Johnny hadn't actually known Heiryung had a brother.

"The second time was when I went to hang out with my friends," Heiryung said. "I was almost six and it had been almost a year since my mom and brother left. He hadn't talked to me much and only fed me when necessary. I came home late and I guess he was made I never told him. One of the guys, he was a little older but he had been my brothers older friend, he had dropped me off."

Mrs. Yang nodded.

"Did he see anything," she asked.

Heiryung thought back. That had been about ten years ago. Almost too long to remember anything. But she thought as hard as she could.

"Maybe," she said, "my dad was waiting by the door and started yelling, so I'm not sure. He only hit me once that time and sent me straight to my room."

"What was this guys name," Johnny said.

He had quickly caught onto what the judge was doing. She was gathering witnesses.

"Yukhei," she said, "he's three years older than me, uhm he might go by something else though if he still lives here. He's originally Chinese."

Mrs. Yang nodded.

"Ok so I know this is private but when did it start getting bad," she asked.

Heiryung froze.

It had always been bad.

But she knew what Mrs. Yang meant.

"I was a little more than 8, maybe 9," Heiryung answered. "It was when he started drinking more. He was more verbally abusive before but when he came home drunk he was always angry and reminiscing about how mom left."

She nodded.

Johnny was upset. He had known Heiryung since she was 10, so when it had gotten bad. Johnny had been 17 at the time. Now Heiryung was almost the same age he had been when he met her.

Looking at this girl he would think she was such a baby. A small dog honestly. He never would've looked at her and thought he had once been the same age. But once you got to know her, you would think she was older.

Now he knew why.

"One last thing Ms. Lee," Mrs. Yang said.

"What is your brother and mom's names?"

Johnny looked at Heiryung.

"Lee Hyegyeong and Minhyung," Heiryung answered.

Her brother's name seemed foreign to her, but to Johnny it was strangely familiar.

"Those are their Korean names though," Heiryung said.

Johnny glanced at the lawyer who was now leaning forward to hear their names.

"My mom is Canadian," she said, "you might find her under Hannah Lee and Mark Lee. They're probably in Canada though."

Johnny felt like he had been sucked punched.

"No," he muttered, "your mom might be, but Mark he's here alright."
