There is an awkward silence around us as we sat there by the lake behind the cabin house where we used to swim together 12 years ago. It is still clean though and 'swimmable' I guess. Just the sound of the birds chirping, the wind blowing and bringing some leaves to fall down the trees, the wooden bench under us as we move a little waiting for the other one to talk first.
This can't do. I hate silence in this situation. It's too intense.
I clear my throat just when Ryan says, "I-"
"Yes?" I reply too quickly because I'm afraid I interrupted him just now and I want him to continue talking.
"I'm sorry. For what happened earlier. It was... embarrassing, to be honest." He doesn't look at me but still with his habit, brushing behind of his neck with one hand. That's cute.
"You're embarrassed now? After you almost soaked my blouse in tears?" I laugh at saying that. Yes, my blouse almost soaked in his tears but it doesn't that visible because I was wearing a crop top that falls right above my belly, just enough to hide my navel. I hope it works in adding some jokes to this intense conversation.
He laughs a little. Oh, I miss that deep laugh.
"Oh, come on. Don't remind me of that. I was embarrassed enough to cry in front of a girl."
"Nothing to be embarrassed about being honest, Ryan. I actually... respect that. Because I know it was hard." I turn my face to look at him. He is still leaning forward with hands clamped together.
He sits back against the bench, hands still together. "Well, I guess I still owe you an explanation, right?" He looks at me with the end of his eyes. I know he is till embarrassed to face me after what happened and I'm okay with that.
"Anytime is good for me. I don't want to force you to tell me everything now if you're not ready." I reply honestly.
He shakes his head, "No, I don't think there is a better time to tell you this other than now."
"Alright."
"So," he turns his whole body to face me before continuing, "as you know now, it was my dad. I'm really sorry for his behalf. I know even with apologising can't bring everything back, but I just... I don't know. That's the only thing I can do."
"How did you know it was him?"
"After his death 8 months ago, my Mom accepted the offer she got to work here where my Dad already left a house for us. He never sells the house and he once said to me that I might need this house again. I don't really get what that means so I just said that I will come to visit our house one day, never knew I would live here again. And meet you."
I shift a little in my seat still waiting for him to continue his words.
"Do you remember you get fever when you have the nightmare again? When I came to your house to visit you?" he lifts his eyebrows and asks me.
"Yes" and I nod a little.
"That was when I know the truth."
I frown a little after hearing that.

Ryan's POV
I was driving to Abby's house when Aunt Emma told me that she has a fever. My mom also follows me because she said she has something to talk about with Aunt Emma.
While I was driving, just a minute away from arriving to Abby's, I just remembered I forgot my phone. So, I decided to drop my mom first and go back home to take my phone.
