Cassie's POV
"We just have to climb up here, and then we should be able to get in easily," Lucky says as we sneak through the palace gardens. "I actually planned to come here when we were trying to figure out a way to get Eva and Cas out, but by the time I reached this area, they had already escaped. You don't know how awkward it was to carry them back to the base by myself."
"You could've gotten one of us to help y'know."
"I didn't really have the time to wait for any of you, I had to rush back so they wouldn't get caught," she sighs. "Anyway, let's get going."She shows us a pillar, certain parts of it clearly worn down from when other rebels had climbed up it. Lucky makes her way up first, and manages to open the window with one simple push. Hunter and I follow, clambering into the over decorated bedroom.
"Woah... this was Eva's room, huh?" I breathe, looking around. It's a bit of a mess, like no one has been in here since Eva and Cas left. Maybe that's the case, though I couldn't be sure. Whilst Lucky searches under the bed for the servant uniforms she spoke of, I peek in the drawers and wardrobes with Hunter.
"Hmm, what's this?" He mutters, picking up what appears to be some form of note book. "Oh, a diary, it seems we may be able to find out what was going through little Eva's head when she had that curse."
"Interesting...should we have a look?" I ask, looking over his shoulder.
"Maybe later, for now, I'll put it in here," he replies, dropping it into his bag.Just as Lucky grabs the uniforms I hear the door unlocking. Without thinking, I drag Hunter into the wardrobe with me as Lucky hides under the bed, and just moments after I close the wardrobe, I hear the door open.
"Gosh, she really did make a mess here." Eva's dad. The king. And for whatever reason, he wants Eva back in the palace. "Wherever she is now, I hope she's safe."
Huh?
"As long as she stays away from here, that's all that really matters..." he sighs, sitting down on the bed.
"She'll be back soon and you know it. Stop turning away from the truth Caleb, it makes you weak," a voice replies.
"Who's that?" I whisper, only for Hunter to hush me.
"Why do you want her back so badly?""Because if anyone can ruin my perfect kingdom, it's that girl. If she were any other half blood, I would leave her be, but she's got royal blood. She's a danger to herself, others but more importantly, she's a danger to this system. If someone found out the king had a half blooded daughter, everything would change."
"You're the only one who wants to continue this divide between bloods," Caleb spits. "She's just a kid anyway, how dangerous could she really be?""You know that half bloods have stronger magic than us Pures. And you know how our family has strong magic as well. Who knows, maybe she might have an outburst that kills not only those around her, but herself."
"Enough!"
The room goes silent, so silent that I can hear my heart thudding in my chest. Then, after a long moment, the door opens, then closes again.
"He's gone," I hear Lucky say. Immediately, I push open the doors and tumble out of the cramped space, Hunter laughing slightly as I fall to the floor.
"Who was that other person speaking?" I ask as Lucky shuffles out of her hiding spot.
"It sounded like... the queen. But last I checked, she was dead," she replies.
"The queen?!" Hunter gapes.
"As I said, that's what it sounded like. But the thing is, he was the only one in the room. I wonder what's going on...""Maybe Eva'll know. Go on Cassie, give her a ring."
"No way, she'll find out about our mission if I do," I refute. "Plus, it's late, they're probably sleeping. I'll ask about it another time, first we need to change into these."
