Penelope Parks had the best childhood. She was happy. Her mother and father adored her to the point she was spoiled rotten. The perfect family went on vacations abroad often and lived a picture-perfect life. That was, until Penelope's mother died whilst giving birth to her sister, Liliana. Shocked by the sudden heartbreak, the ginger's father turned to alcohol and blamed the new baby for his soulmate's death, and frequently took it out on his children. Penelope began to miss school to look after her baby sister, as her father had to work. Their father tried so hard to keep it together, but he just couldn't, so, on Liliana's first birthday, he decided to end all this pain, by taking his girls for a ride. Penelope caught on to her father's intentions when he wouldn't slow down approaching a corner and managed to swerve the car just in time to stop it hurling off the cliff, but at expense; the car slammed into the cliff face and her father didn't survive. Liliana was untouched; however, Penelope's right arm was broken, and she found herself concussed.

Liliana was then sent to a foster family, but Penelope ended up in Burnywood 'care' home. The word 'care' is used lightly here, as there wasn't one aspect of care shown in this home. She decides to go by her middle name, Nova, as being called Penelope becomes too painful, reminding her of her life before the accident, with two living parents.

Nova's happy and extroverted personality became less and less, and she soon turns to unhealthy habits as a coping mechanism. She stops eating as a way of gaining some control back, and seeks out the comfort of books as a way of escaping the hell of Burnywood.
The girl's mental health spirals out of control and soon she is underweight, hungry, and hurting herself at night. Only one person seems to care, and his name is Rick Barber.

When her social worker, James, notices Nova's bad health, she is moved to Elm Tree House, only to be reunited with past characters from Burnywood months later.
The ginger decides that she won't be bullied anymore like she was at Burnywood and builds a wall around her true emotions. She only wears dark colours and practically lives in doc martens. She wants to make sure that her new housemates won't mess with her and will leave her alone. Her newfound sarcasm and quiet, reclusive personality convey the message that she wants to be left alone to most of The Dumping Ground residents, but draws a few in.
Her new care worker Tracy takes an interest in the bookworm and soon they become as good as sisters.

At first it seems Nova Parks and Elektra Perkins have nothing in common, being polar opposites of each other, but soon the two girls realise there is more truth in the phrase "opposites attract" than either of them would like to admit. They soon become unlikely best friends and form an unstoppable trio with Liam O'Donovan (Liam claims he is the looks, Nova is definitely the brains, and Elektra is the wild card, quite literally). When feelings develop and complicate things, Nova tries to shut Elektra out, but the blue haired girl is too damn stubborn for her own good, and soon they find themselves falling for each other. They just have to hope Liam's crush on Nova doesn't crush him too badly...
