Nova knew from the moment she woke up panting in a panicked state that today would be a bad day. She'd had another nightmare, this time involving her mum yelling at her for not looking after her sister. Her dream-state mother was acting like Nova's drunken father and Nova woke up hating her brain for tainting the perfect character of her loving mother with that of her grieving, alcoholic father. At least she wasn't vocal in this nightmare; no one had come to check on her so Nova took that as a positive sign that she hadn't screamed, and although slightly shaken, Nova took a sip of her bedside water and groaned as she stepped out of bed. The stuffy air of her bedroom felt suffocating, so she wandered over to my window, opened it a crack, and got dressed into some loose fitting jeans and a hoodie. It would be a casual lounging around day today.
Mike had been wanting Nova to spend more time outside of her room, so she decided she should probably join everyone for breakfast this morning, just to get him off her back. So that's what she did; though she didn't eat anything, she sat at the table with her mug of hot coffee and talked softly with Tee about her favourite things, as no one else had woken up yet.
When everyone had woken up and made their way downstairs for breakfast, which was beans on toast, as it was every weekend, Nova deeply regretted her decision to join everyone for breakfast.
Liam had started it, the game of food jenga they were playing with their out of date beans, and the sight made Nova want to throw up. Luckily, Tracy had turned up to put a stop to it.
"What are you doing?" Tracy asked.
"Making a tower, what does it look like?" Liam retaliated, his characteristic sarcasm lacing his voice.
"Okay, why?"
"You didn't expect us to eat this rubbish, did you?" Sapphire snapped.
"Gina keeps giving us these cheap beans, and they're out of date!" Carmen scoffed.
"Well we've got to save money." Tracy argued. That started the symphony of complaints about saving money:
"I couldn't go swimming!"
"We've had no takeaways."
"And no electrical time."
"Okay, okay, it's a bit rubbish but here's nothing we can do!" Tracy said helplessly.Gus then walked in screaming and hitting his head in what Nova immediately knew to be a meltdown. "Mike cancelled my piano lessons. I always have piano lessons on a Wednesday. If I don't then Wednesdays don't work!"
Everyone just stared at Gus, so Nova jumped down from her position on top the counter and crouched down beside him, softly telling him it was going to be okay.
"Look at me, Gus. I can give you piano lessons instead, on a Wednesday, at the same time. Will that do?"
Gus looked at Nova confused, "You said you had forgotten how to play the piano."
"I remember now, okay. I got up to grade six, is that enough?"
Gus nodded. "Then I'll teach you piano." she smiled softly, glad she could help Gus.
