010: secrets

CHAPTER TEN: secrets

"Who died in here?" Nova asked, holding her nose in a failed attempt to stop the horrid smell from overrunning my immune system. The girl was stood outside Gus's bedroom watching Frank and Liam 'cleaning'. The sound of the girl's melodic voice must've startled Liam and Frank as they both jumped and hid something behind their backs.

"Oh, Nova, phew! I thought you were someone important for a second." Liam said, relieved.
Nova sarcastically smiled at the dig and asked what they were hiding.
"Gus's diaries." Frank informed her. Nova stepped into the room using her cream-knit jumper to block the smell. She leant over Liam's shoulder and read the first page.
"This is a major invasion of privacy." Nova stated, not liking the idea of someone reading her diary like this. "You are in so much trouble if Mike or Gina find out."
"Well, they're not gonna find out, are they?" Liam retaliated.
"I don't know... I'm not very good at keeping my mouth shut." The ginger shrugged, innocently.
"We'll pay you a fiver." Frank tried to bargain desperately, "Each."
Liam looked annoyed but agreed. Nova smiled.
"Pleasure doing business with you." She shook their hands and left them to clean up.

On her way back from the bathroom, Nova ran into Tracy spying on someone from behind the corridor.
"Whatcha doing?" Nova quickly spoke, putting her hands on Tracy's shoulder. Tracy jumped and turned to look at Nova, annoyed.
"Jesus! You scared the living daylights out of me."
"Who are you spying on?" she asked.
"No one." Tracy frowned and walked away.
"uh huh." Nova wasn't convinced.
"Fine. Sapphire is up to something."
Nova nodded, "Well duh. She's been sneaking out for ages. I reckon she's seeing someone." Nova suggested. A big advantage of preferring your own company was that you were able to observe everyone else without being noticed, Nova had found. This skill had come in extremely handy at Burnywood, and it looked like it would here too.
Tracy smiled at Nova, informed her she was a genius and jogged down the stairs and out the door.
Nova retreated back to her room.

"Now what are you doing?" Nova questioned the boys, leaning against the door frame of not Gus's room, but the doorway of the girls' toilets.
"Nothing!" Frank replied.
"Close the door." Liam instructed. Nova locked the three of  them in.
"Mike's got the diaries. We need a distraction to get them back."
Nova raised her eyebrow, unimpressed, "By clogging up the girls loo?"
The boys shrugged.
"Couldn't you have used the boys? Or at least waited until I've been? I'm bursting!" Nova complained, to which Liam sniggered.
"Sorry Nova, but this is more important than you wetting yourself."
"I beg to differ." She said, exasperated.
Frank told the girl to use the boys loo, so Nova rolled her eyes and turned on her heel to leave.
"Can I trust ya not to tell anyone?" Liam asked, grabbing Nova's writs and spinning her around.
"Like I said earlier, I'm not very good at keeping my mouth shut."
"Nova, babe. please." Liam placed his free hand on Nova's arm, the other still holding her hand. "I'll owe you." he said solemnly. Nova tried not to laugh at his serious facial expression, or Frank's, for that matter.
"Yeah, owe me another fiver." she smiled, before leaving.
After quickly using the boys toilet, Nova sat in the window by the stairs and watched the boys' plan play out. Gina went to sort her plant out and Mike went to sort the toilet with Liam, leaving Frank stuck in the office with Gina.

Nova looked out the window to see Tracy following Sapphire into the garden. Sapphire then stormed off but Tracy continued further into the garden.
Nova was torn between helping Frank, teasing Liam as he unblocked the toilet, or helping Tracy.
In the end, she decided to help Frank, figuring he'd owe her even more money then. She walked into the office and asked if Gina could help her get a game down from the cupboard. Nova used the excuse that the younger ones wanted to play with her.
Just as Gina got up, Mike and Liam came in.

"I thought I locked those up!" Mike said, gesturing to the notebook in Gina's hand. Nova and Gina both looked at Liam. Frank then jumped out from behind the desk. "I'm going to wet myself!" he exclaimed, legging it to the loo.
Nova burst out laughing, properly laughing at their misfortune.
"Busted!" She giggled, earning disapproving looks from Mike and Gina.

Gina eventually got the game down from the cupboard, and Nova reluctantly gathered Tee, Carmen, Johnny and Toby to play, deciding she had to keep the ruse up that she actually needed the game.

"Am I a fruit?" Johnny asked.
Tracy then walked in and introduced Ferris, Sapphire's boyfriend, who then joined in with the game before being questioned about his love for Sapphire.

A few minutes later Sapphire burst in.
"What did you tell Tracy?"
The couple then went somewhere private. Of course, Nova went to follow them, Elektra joining her.
"Oh this is so juicy!" Elektra smirked when Ferris admitted to laying the blame on Sapphire for stealing.

"What are you two troublemakers up to, ehh?" a thick Jamaican accent boomed from behind the two girls.
"Sapphire's boyfriend is here." Nova said, smiling.
"Ohh okay, so you thought you'd spy on them, hey? Go on." Gina said, telling them to leave.

Elektra sat opposite Sapphire and Ferris whilst Nova sat on the other end of the table by Tracy for tea. It was curry night, and Nova was due on her period tomorrow, so she decided to eat as much as she could.
"Have you got a car?" Carmen asked. He didn't.
"Just wait 'til someone leaves one unlocked." Tracy replied bitterly, earning a "Shut up!" from Sapphire. The doorbell rang and Tracy went to get it.
There was more teasing about Sapphire getting married from the younger kids, but Nova was too busy talking to Liam to pay much attention.
Mike then started teasing Gina about her nickname that he found out about in Gus' diary, but the laughter died down when Ferris had to leave because Tracy had gotten Ferris arrested for stealing.

"You did the right thing." Nova told Tracy, as Sapphire stormed off.
"You think so?"
"I know so." She smiled at Tracy softly. She returned the smile and pulled the ginger into a hug.
"Alright! No need to get soppy." Nova muttered, pulling away from the hug. Tracy laughed lightly, "sorry."
