Four Years Ago:
"Melanie!"Patton yelled as he ran after his sister, "Melanie stop please!" his voice came out broken, a sob tearing from his throat as he feared what his sister might be thinking and what she might do. Melanie stopped abruptly, before turning back to Patton. She dropped the books in her hands before coming towards him. Patton flinched, preparing himself for the worst.
This is it. This is the moment he's been fearing for two years now. His family found out he's gay. They're going to hate him. They're going to yell at him and tell him he's going to hell. They're going to make him break up with Lucas and he'd get into trouble and- Melanie wrapped her arms around her brother, "I'm sorry! I shouldn't have run away that was stupid," Melanie said as Patton stood there shocked, "I was just... I thought you'd be mad at me for walking in and then for seeing and then... I'm sorry"
"You-you're not mad that I'm gay?" he asked her as she came away.
She shook her head, "Patton my best friend is BI, why the hell would I care if you're gay or not?"
"Language Mel," Patton said, but sighed, "It's just that... mom and dad have always said that being gay is a sin. I was scared you believed them."
Melanie shook her head, "I love Mom and Dad, but there's a reason I've stopped bringing friends over. So many of their beliefs are wrong and..." Melanie trailed off, "I'm not mad that you're gay. I won't tell anybody you're not ready to tell. I'll support you."
Patton smiled and wiped away at his tears before hugging Melanie again, "This is why you're my favorite sister"
"Well, it helps when I'm the only one competing... Uhm, but Mom and Dad want us to meet them at the hospital. Harry was admitted this morning and they think it's serious," Patton nodded. He looked back down the hall, half tempted to go back and give a proper goodbye to Lucas but before he could ask Mel if she would mind waiting she had already gone out of the school and left Patton alone in the hallway. He sighed, a bit upset when his phone buzzed with a new message.
Lucas: Hope everything went okay. I'll call you after my meeting. You're amazing no matter what, remember that.
Patton smiled, a big and goofy grin as he felt his heartbeat quicken.
Patton: It went great! Mel was just surprised, she says she'll support me.
Lucas: That's great Pat!
Patton: I know! I gotta go, you're amazing Lucas.
Patton put his phone away before quickly going after his sister.
_________
Weeks had passed since Melanie had walked in on Patton and Lucas kissing. It had been the same day Harrison was diagnosed with stage one cancer, they had caught it early and the doctors were confident that he would be able to fight it off. Still, just the word had sent fear through everyone in the family.
It had become much harder for them, Harrison had moved back into the house so he'd be closer to the hospital. His parents had made Patton quit the winter play which was upsetting but he had done it anyway. Less time had been spent with Roman, Logan, and Lucas, and more had been spent at home. His parents had gone back to their old ways, always telling Patton off when something he did wasn't 'appropriate' for a boy to do. Patton hated it, he hated how strict they were with gender stereotypes.
