Day Three | Sunday | August 21st
Virgil didn't know when he had fallen asleep. All he knew is that before he closed his eyes the sun was beginning to rise and when he opened them again the sun had finished coming out from behind the city building, slowly making it's way to the other end of the sky. He blinked back in surprise at the harsh light that had snuck through the cheap blinds his window had worn for years now. For a moment, he just laid there on his old bed, staring at his wall and allowing his mind to wander slightly.
He knew he should do something else, anything else. He should get up and go try and do something to help the others. He should try and get Remy on his side, or make it so Deceit and Remus stop being so... angry around him. He should find a way to get the cuff off his wrist. Find a way to get everyone to safety There were hundreds of other things he should do, but he couldn't. Not yet at least. Not yet.
He had a plan, granted it wasn't foolproof but it was a plan. It'd get them somewhere safe, well it'd get them somewhere. He could do this, he could go through with this plan. He could save everyone downstairs, he could get them away from it all. He just needed to be smart about this.
The sounds of an argument beginning to break out in the kitchen made his eyes drift towards the door. By now they had realized that someone had dropped the keys, that they were missing. Any second now they'd realize that they weren't in the possession of anybody with the 'authority' to use them. They'd realize they weren't anywhere else in the house, there wouldn't be any way for his friends to have them. They'd assume he had them, he did have them. They'd come in here, they'd demand to know where he put them. Remus would read his mind, but if Virgil was careful than they wouldn't find anything. The thing was that Virgil knew a way that made it hard for Remus to read through his thoughts, but it didn't always work. He'd just have to hope. To hope and pray. Virgil took a deep breath as he prepared himself for the day ahead.
As soon as he had done so the door to the bedroom flew open and Deceit rushed in with Remus behind him. "Where are the keys, Virgil?" Deceit demanded loudly.
Virgil moved off the bed, focusing his thoughts in a way that Remus wouldn't be able to read his mind, "What keys? I do-don't have them"
"You're not lying," Deceit said "The keys are gone, I want them back"
"If-if I had the-the keys I wouldn't be here anymore. I'd be g-gone and so would my-my friends"
'I don't have the key. I don't have the key. I don't have the key.' Virgil repeated the phrase over and over, it was the loudest thought in his head. It masked most of everything else he was thinking. It was one of the only ways he knows of that kept Remus from being able to think of what he was really thinking, he didn't know why it worked. All he knew was that it seemed to form some kind of odd wall or barrier, it could be broken pretty easy but it could also be put together just as easily. He had discovered it while having an anxiety attack, he had kept repeating the same phrase over and over and Remus hadn't been able to read his mind.
Since than Virgil had used it to his advantage only a handful of times. Remus had learned what he was doing and how to try to get past it, but it didn't always work. Remus was staring at him from where he stood behind Deceit, his eyes narrowed in concentration as he tried to break through the wall. Eventually, he sighed and pulled Deceit out of the room as he whispered things to him under his breath. Virgil let out a breath of relief as he allowed himself to relax against the wall. He pushed his hands into his pockets, his right hand finding his fidget toy and clicking it between his two fingers. He was about to stand up again, move towards the door and see if he could make his way down to the basement, but before he could do any of that the door opened again and Deceit stood in front of it.
