Meghan's POV:
"So where are we off to now?" Kelley asks as she glances at me through the rearview mirror. I give her the address to Sophie's apartment complex. I need to say goodbye before we leave.
We pull up to the front of the building. "Do you want us to stay in the car?"
"Umm... ya. We will only be a little while. She will probably want to come out after and meet you guys. She is a big fan of the USWNT."
"Ok, we will be here."
I get out of the car and make my way up the stairs to her door. I have made the journeys so many times and as I knock on the door I realize that this is probably the last time I will make it. Sophie is really the only thing I will miss in this town. I am grateful for Jan but she could only do so much.
The door flings open and I am practically tackled to the ground in a hug.
"Hi, Soph."
'Hi. thank god you are ok. I was so worried about you ya know."
"I know Soph. It's gonna be ok now though." We make our way into the living room. I guess her parents aren't home.
"Thank you for everything Soph. You are the best. And don't think just because I am moving across the country I won't still bug the hell out of you. I will literally call you all day every day."
"Oh, I'm counting on it!" She punches my shoulder.
We talked for a long time. Just enjoying the time. We keep it light-hearted until the end. We cry and hug. I remind her that it's not like we are breaking up. She laughed at this. We agree to talk all the time. Eventually, we make it out to the car and Soph has the time of her life meeting Kelley and Emily. She also gives Emily a don't hurt my best friend talk which is hilarious. She actually looks scared too.
We say our last goodbyes before getting in the car and leaving. It's hard but like I said it's not like we are breaking up but I guess I looked like I was sulking.
"You ok back there?" Em asks kindly.
"Ya... I know I'm gonna miss her like crazy but it's all good. Change is just hard. But I just want to thank you guys again for everything." I say with a smile.
"When are you going to listen and stop thanking us?" Kelley says laughing at me.
"Oh, I'm sorry I'm grateful mom!" We all laugh at that.
I don't think I'm going to actually call Kelly mom. It just doesn't feel right. I had a mom and she was the best. Either way, I am so glad she is going to take care of me.
-----
We just arrived at a small hotel we are staying at for tonight because we aren't driving back to DC until tomorrow. We needed to come here and get cleaned up a little before heading over to the courthouse to get the adoption settled. But after that, the plan is that we drive back to DC tomorrow, and then after a few days there getting everything straightened out Kelley and I will fly to Utah, and Emily is going back to Portland. I know I will miss her so much but I guess there is a USWNT camp two weeks after we get to Utah. Kelley asked if I still wanted to go or just get settled but I obviously wanted to go. It's definitely crazy getting everything worked out but I really want to see all the girls.
We all put on some nicer clothes before heading back out to the courthouse.
"Are You ok? You look nervous." Kelley asks me as she looks over at me from the front seat. I managed to convince Emily to sit in the back.
"Mm, I am."
"I promise it will be all good. My lawyer said there is basically no way that the judge won't say yes." She says as she squeezes my hand.
