Chapter 46

Meghan's POV:

I wake the next morning in Kelley's arms and Moose laying across my lap. Oh... I must have had another panic attack. I reach over to the nightstand to grab my phone without waking Kelley.

"Hey, Meg! I hope you're doing ok! I'm really sorry if Kelley is mad." I read the text from Maddy. There is a similar one from Emma and some of the other girls on the team. This brings everything back. I now remember that I was at the party and then everything that happened after.

I feel Kelley stir next to me. I turn to face her as she wakes up.

"Good morning," she says, still groggy.

"Hi..." is all I get out. I really don't want her to be mad at me for going to the party last night. Moose sense my nervousness and crawls on top of me.

"Hey.... Shhh, it's ok. I'm not mad." Kelley whispers realizing my anxieties.

"You're not?"

"No. You don't drink or do any drugs right?"'

"Yes!" I say quickly.

"Ok, then I'm not mad. It's ok to go and have fun. I would be upset if you drank or did drugs but you didn't. It's ok for you to be a teenager and go to parties"

"So you're not even mad about having to come to get me?"

"No. You need anything, ever you call and I will be there. I don't care what's wrong or what time it is I am there. I love you kid." She whispers to me, taking away my worries.

"Thank you. I love you too." I smile back at her.

The rest of our day is low key. It's Saturday so neither of us has practice. I end up going on a run with Moose for a bit but nothing else special.

Time skip

Today is the day the roster for the She Believes cup is announced. Becky, Christen, Kelley, and I sit around our kitchen table just hanging out until we get the call from Jill. We ended up getting bored just sitting there so I pulled out Uno and we have been playing for some time now.

I am about to win the game when Christen's phone rings. We all get excited as she answers. Listening to the one-sided conversation and the expression on her face she definitely made it. I mean the three of them pretty much will be called up no matter what so I don't know why they are nervous. I am the only one who probably won't get called up.

We continue our game and soon enough Becky gets a call as well. She of course is also called up.

Once again our game continues until Kelley's phone rings. She obviously gets very excited and picks it up.

"Hello! This is Kelley," she says into the phone and we hear the one-sided conversation. "I'm good. How are you, Jill?" ... "Yes We are all just hanging out waiting for your call." she giggles as she speaks. Wow, Jill is really making her wait to tell her. As if on cue.

"Great! Thank you so much, Jill! I will work super hard!" From her face, we can tell she has made it. "Ya... Oh... Ok." Kelley's face turns to sad confusion. She gets up from the table and goes into the other room so we aren't listening to her.

"That doesn't seem great," I say awkwardly. Becky and Christen just look at me and shrug. They clearly don't know what's going on either. Before any more can be said,

"That's bullshit Jill and you know it!" Kelley yells into the phone. "I don't care it's stupid. Did you even try?"

Whatever is going on Kelly is really angry. Something I don't think I have ever seen her be. I just glance at Christen and Becky but they give the same confused looks they had before. A couple of minutes later Kelley comes back into the room with a sad face.

"I'm not going am I?" Kelley just looks at me sadly. Fuck. I really thought I was going. I mean I know I'm young but I thought I had been playing really well.

As much as it sucks I'm not as heartbroken as I thought I would be. I will just train even harder and prove to them next time I'm even better. And I did just get back to playing after being in the hospital and getting adopted. It's been a lot.

"I'm sorry Meghan." Kelley comes over and I stand up and we hug for a minute.

"It's ok Kelley. I'm not crushed. A little disappointed but I will just work even harder now."

Kelley and I release from our hug and she looks at me and I can tell there is something else she isn't telling me.

"Kelley, what is it? Just tell me."

She hesitated but then said. "Jill explained to me why you aren't on the team. She said that you were going to be but then the US soccer Federation told her she couldn't. She wouldn't tell me anything else. I don't know."

"What!?" Christen is the first one to respond but we all have angry looks on our faces.

"Ya, I don't have a clue," Kelley says looking back to check on me.

"Well, that's shitty." Is all I manage to come up with.

All of us are unsure of what to do so I decide we are finishing our game of Uno. I again do not win. I guess today is not my day.

We spend the next couple of hours calling around to see if anyone knows what the hell is going on. Nobody on the team knew anything which made sense. We also called the girl's agents to see if they knew anything. Apparently they were going to look into it. I originally was just going to let it go. Ya it sucked and I was disappointed and curious but I was just going to move on. However, the girls were adamant about finding out what was going on. It seemed like the way Jill explained it they wouldn't want me playing at all which means if I ever wanted to play for the US I would have to get everything sorted out now.
