4: My New Gift

After the class ended, I quickly took the subway and come to the cafè. As I entered the cafè counter, I saw a familiar face standing there. And she was amazed by seeing me in the cafè. She somehow spoke,

"Taerim-ah! How are you here so early? You always come at 2:00 PM. And it's just 1:00 PM now."

It was Yuni eonnie. She is the owner of Café Twilight.

I knew her since I was 12. She was always very kind and supportive to me. So, I always considered her as my elder sister. When I left my home and came to Gangnam-do, she was the one who gave me her previous apartment to live in and a stable job at her café. At this point, she is family to me.

As I start to put on my service apron over my denim, I put a red ladybug magnet on the date of 13th June on the fridge calendar and said,

"Eonnie, I got you a nice gig on Wednesday. A patron wants the whole second floor for an event with in house catering and decoration."

Eonnie was looking at me with a suspicious look on her face and asked,

"How many people are coming? Who's the patron? What's the event for? What's the menu?"

As I finished tying the final knot on my hospital gown, I went to the register computer and answered while typing,

"Probably 50- 100. Could be 150 at most. The patron is BTS. It's the event for their five year anniversary. And the menu for the event is..."

As I was about to say the menu when Yuni interrupted me in the middle and spoke,

"Whoa, Whoa, Whoa! What! BTS! You mean the world famous #1 K-pop boy band consisting of 7 members?"

I just nodded a yes and she said,

"Oh my God! It's awesome! When are they going to pay for it? Did they talk about it?"

I just shrugged and said,

"They won't pay for it. I will."

Eonnie had a bewildered look written all over her face. I just replied,

"Look, one of them are my best friend.  And I can pay for it. Trust me. Just make sure that all that you put around the party; utensils, glass, plates and decoration; should be in steel."

I don't know why Taehyung asked me to specify that. Maybe because their name (Bangtan Sonyondan) had Bangtan in it.("Bangtan" means "Bulletproof" in Korean.) Eonnie just laughed and replied,

"Ooh~ Word-play. I got that. You note down the menu in the register computer. I'll personally make sure everything in prepared to the spot."

I nodded a yes as I saw eonnie walk away while humming "Boy In Luv" in her breath. I could tell that she was excited for it.

She only hums "Boy In Luv" in her breath when she gets excited.

But suddenly she came to a stop before the glass door of the café. I thought that maybe she was going to ask how she never got to know that a member of BTS was my best friend. But when she turned around and started to come closer to me, I could see that a shadow of worry had casted itself on her face. As she reached the counter, she spoke in a sad tone,

"But I have to out of town this week for a family event. I think you will have to manage the event on your own. Can you do that?"

Now I get why she was at the café today. Even though she is the owner of the café, she is a housewife with 2 twin toddlers as kids. They recently joined elementary school and she felt bad to not being able to give her kids enough time. So, she promoted me to manage the café on her behalf as the manager and her husband, Mr. Jo Miwon, is an actuary. So, he stays at the café till 2:00 PM or until I reached the café. She seldom came to the café ever since she made me the manager.

But something else had taken me more aback than her presence. She wanted me to manage a patron event on my own? I had never gotten such a have responsibility on my shoulders. I just blurted out while stuttering a little,

"Me? You're letting m..me manage this event on my own?"

She got a smile on her lips and said,

"Of course. You have managed this café on my behalf for so long that I myself have lost count. It's time you took a responsibility like that in your hands. It'll enhance your experience. And plus, one of them is your best friend.  So, I'm sure that you will be able to manage this event better that anyone. So, brace yourself. All the contact numbers and details are noted in the computer file "Events" and you will have have to start preparing from now. Okay?"

I could not be any happier. I just went and hugged Yuni our of appreciation. I just kept thanking her for trusting me with such a huge responsibility. She patted me on the back and I was left at the counter with a stunned mind. I went to register computer and started to note down the menu before contacting the caterer.

As I called the catering agency and was waiting for them to answer, I looked at the the calendar on the fridge and the ladybug magnet placed on the 13th of June and repeated a sentence in my mind to make myself calm down.

Just 5 days. And then you manage your first event.

But it's a very important chapter. Because, (SPOILER!!) the event is where it will all might begin. OOOHHHH!!🤔🤔🤔
