The day Griffin turned twenty-one, she decided to celebrate it by throwing a picnic. She invited her usual friend group, the ones she'd normally go out with as well as she texted me about it. Whilst she offered that I could bring Katherine and Wesley if I wanted, when asked, they both declined. My best friend for obvious reasons—that being her distaste towards the girl—but Wesley for something unknown to me. He seemed cold when I mentioned it and he didn't seem all that interested, leaving me no choice but to accept it.
During the picnic, it was great to get to know her friends. Meg and Lily were really nice and welcoming with Ollie and Joe keeping the banter going. Although my opinion on the latter individual was still shaky, there were no hard feelings from my end. The bunch was lovely and getting along with them felt easy. I could see why Griffin was friends with them.
After a bit of celebrations, involving drinks, food and of course, a birthday cake, along with present exchange, we were planned to regroup later that evening. Although Griffin's birthday fell on a Monday, with it being the Easter holidays, no one had to worry about missing class the following day. Not that anyone would've been worried, of course.
"This is kind of nice, isn't it?" the birthday girl voiced with her eyes closed. She leaned back by keeping her weight up on her hands, ankles crossed as she stretched out her legs. For it to be April, it was really warm out, with a lot of people taking advantage of the sunshine. After majority of the crew left, with me and Griffin remaining, it was much quieter between us.
I turned my head to look at her as my body continued to lie flat on the ground, a soft blanket underneath me. With my legs pulled up and bent at the knee, I intertwined my fingers on my stomach.
"With all the time you spend cooped up in your bedroom, I didn't think you'd be one to enjoy the outside," I made the snarky comment, most likely sounding like a parent. Griffin laughed and refused to answer. She moved around and out of the sun, leaning on her stomach as she rolled over and closer to me. "What?"
"Ollie knows," she said as she kept her eyes on me. Shielding the sun from my own, I placed my hand just a little above my face, squinting. Griffin groaned when she realised that I had no idea what she meant by that. "He knows that, um... well, it's funny, actually."
"Listening," I reassured her.
"Out of everyone, I think us two are the closest. And, well, basically, he just told me that he noticed something different in the way I act, which is complete bullshit because nothing has changed. I've always been like this," she said as a matter of fact. Even though I told her I was listening, her words got the best of me. Her voice. There was something about it that caused me to zone out, my free hand toying with the strand of her hair that the wind blew around.
