After we had gotten home from the swimming we had done it was nearly nighttime. April's mother was mad that we hadn't told her where we had been all day but at the same time we didn't care because we had a wonderful day. I also didn't care because Nick wanted me to come to a party tonight at a friend's house. April was invited of course.
April dug through her closet, "I think you and Nick totally have another chance to be together, you know what I mean?"
I laughed, "I don't think he really wants to be in a relationship with me after I broke up with him over the fact I live too far away. He would probably use that against me to say no."
April stood up straight, "Hazel, Nick and I had a lot of talking to do after you and him broke up and after you moved. He was crushed and the only thing he could say was how much he would kill for you to just come back so he could woo you again so you two could be together. Now, you really think Nick would just use the reason you broke up with him for turning you down? Geez, the guy would probably have a heart attack if he heard you just say that. Hazel, he loves you. I know he does. Hes told me for Christ's sake."
I blushed, "Your right, April."
She raised up a short black dress, "I know I am, love. I know."
I dug through my bag and eventually found my shorts and a cut off black top. I put it on and laced my VANS, drying my hair after my shower and putting in some mouse to keep my curls from going flat, even though they wouldn't. I started on my makeup but stopped when I saw a flash from outside the window. I turned around quickly in confusion.
"April!" I yelled out.
She came bustling from the bathroom with her makeup half done, "What?"
"There was... something like a camera flash outside your bedroom window!"
She raised an eyebrow, "Honey, it was probably a passing car."
I slowed my heart rate down slightly, "Maybe..."
I turned back around slowly and finished my makeup with a small fear in the back of me. Why was I still so freaked out? For all I know it really could have been just a car passing. I put it all behind me and we loaded inside of April's car smelling good and happy.
"Number one rule, never let-"
"A sister hook up with an ugly guy." I finished her sentence and she laughed.
"Okay, maybe we have been to enough partys to understand the rules of the party!" We pulled up to Joey Bradshaw's house and we could hear and feel the music pounding from inside the car.
"This is gonna be fun!" I jumped out and ran up to the porch and several guy's turned there heads and cheered.
"Aye! Its little Hazel! What are you doing in town?" Kaleb Hinder smiled big at me.
Gale Keel laughed out, "LITTLE Hazel? Whatever, K, shes a sexy beast now!"
I blushed, "Men stop, stop, really! Your embarrassing me! How have you all been!"
"Better since that freak Sam moved." Braison spoke up from the corner of the porch.
All the guys agreed silently.
"Sam? Samuel? The photographer for the schools yearbook? Where did he move?" I raised an eyebrow.
Joey Bradshaw smirked from the doorway, "Hampton."
"What? Hampton?" April spoke up beside me, shooting a look at me.
"A lot of people thought you and him ran off together." Braison laughed.
I nearly choked, "Puh-lease. Me? With Samuel? That kid is so greasy he could probably fry potatoes!"
Everyone laughed around me and I smiled. It felt food being back around the people I had grown up around. I was thankful I had grown up being popular. April... Was not so much that lucky.
I remember when April was younger that she was always getting picked on for being so fat and so ugly. I was her first and only friend besides Nick and two other people. It wasn't that hard to understand. April was just born more than a reject. She was born a reject of the rejects. Queen rejects. Even though she was a reject she was still my friend and I loved her. I intertwined my hand with hers and she squeezed my hand tightly. I could tell she was very nervous.
"Where's Nick?" I looked at Joey.
He smirked, "Hasn't arrived yet. Don't worry, you can sit on Papas lap while you wait."
April snorted and rolled her eyes. I shot a sideways look at her and she fixed her face. She knew she couldn't speak up for me. She would get knocked flat on her butt.
"I'd rather her not, Joey." A hand clasped on my shoulder and I turned around and saw Nick with a sort of deadly glare in his eyes that I hadn't seen ever before.
Joey cleared his throat and shot Nick an angry glare beforing leaving back into the house
Braison cheered out, "There gonna be a fight tonight!"
Nick smirked, "Well, B-Boy, I'm afraid not."
His eyes widened and we walked up the porch and inside to the drinks and quickly scooped alcohol punch into our cups and before I knew it we were all dancing together and eventually April wondered off and I tried to keep an eye on her but ended up failing miserably. Nick and I never left each others sides and eventually got each other up against a wall or two and began kissing. I knew I was drunk due to the fact I couldn't walk a few feet forward without Nick having to catch me and straighten me back up. That's when I cut off my alcohol consumption.
"I gotta pee okay? Stay right here." Nick whispered into my ear and stumbled his way off across the room.
Of course to my stupidity I wandered outside to the back yard and sat in a chair by the door. I heard footsteps and looked over to see Joey.
"Hey, pretty thing." He grinned with a red cup in his hand. He was drunk.
"Hi." I stood and blinked in confusion.
He made his way to me and grabbed me up, "Let's go to my bedroom."
I pushed his hands away, "No."
His hands tightened on my wrists, "I dont think I asked."
A stone came out of the wooded area beside his house and next thing I knew Joey was running to the area and I was inside. With an eratic heartbeat, I stood back in my place and waited for Nick.
